Large format rotating back and Ries tripods

Ries tripods with either a 6" or 4" crown will interfere with the rotation of a camera back on a 4x5 or 5x7 Linhof Technika.

Have any other Technika owners found a solution around this when using a Ries tripod?

can you use the tripod socket on the bed, vs the one on the rear standard frame?
Are you using a Ries head, or are you mounting the camera directly to the tripod crown?

I'm using less heavy wide angle lenses so using the socket on the bed would make it too imbalanced. I'm mounting directly to the tripod crown. There is a solution for this - it's called a tripod head (which I was trying to avoid).

When I had a Linhof TK45 I used a heavy alum Gitzo tripod and a 1570 mag head. It was more than enough with such a big base.

When I moved to 8x10 and 7x17 I needed the big Ries tripod and head. I tried the j600 and 250 double tilt on my 8x10 light weight Phillips, but it was always a little shakey. Now I have big Ries tripod and base under each You got to have the pieces parts for stability.

Some times you just have to wait a little longer to get what you want. I'm only 74.

I doubt that it would be too difficult to make a spacer to raise the camera a bit.
I've done this once with two 3/4" plywood discs with a 3/8" blind nut in one and a 3/8" carriage
bolt in the other, then glued together. Obviously the riser would be made small enough
to clear the back.

I use view cameras directly on top of Ries tripods all the time - no head at all. But those are either flat bed or monorail designs. With a drop
bed like a Technika you just need a solid spacer. Anyone with an elemenatary woodshop can make something like this, but you need to be sure your 3/8-11 attachment bolt will still reach thru; otherwise that will need modification too.

Ries confirmd they can provide a custom crown with a smaller diameter to provide clearance for the revolving back.
