I absolutely love my Leitz f/2.0 5cm Summar lens, circa 1936. It is great for many things due to its unique look. This is most notable in the out of focus areas. Looks very swirly...almost fun house swirly...a bit insane looking. I want this look, but with the capability to put the image on large format film. Any suggestions? The more it covers, the better, although I might consider lenses that are good for 4x5 only.

Petzvals, Aero-Ektar, Xenar Typ D f:3.5, and possibly Zeiss Planar f:3.5 - although I can't remember having used mine wide open. The Xenar Typ D is definitely swirly.

Use the same lens but the 12 cm., f/2 version. Will cover 4X5. I have a 1962 version in barrel that I used for several years in the seventies when I was poorer. Reversed it for infinity work; normal mounting for macro work. The out of focus does show some swirly effects that I never noticed until you mentioned it. You might find the 12 cm. occasionally at auction.

The Dallmeyer Pentac 208mm f2.9 would be a good choice but the branded lenses are usually pricey. You can sometimes find the military version for a reasonable price. They don't say Dallmeyer but usually say pentac.
