Spring has finallly arrived in the mountains around Brevard,NC.A lot of flowers in bloom on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Pisgah National Forest,a light covering of leaves and flowers around the waterfalls and the light is usually close to perfect.Good time for street photography on Main and Broad Streets in Brevard.Damn,I sound like the Chamber of Commerce.

I just got back from shooting a wonderful waterfall in Dekalb County near Smithville in Tennessee called Carmac Falls. There were actually three different waterfalls in that small gorge on the Evins Mill Retreat property. I was able to shoot two of them as well as doing some shots at Fall Creek Falls State Park on the way to the Retreat. When I get off my butt long enough to process and print I'll upload some shots.

Every other summer, last 18 years, we spend a week on the beach at topsail island, nc and then a week in Brevard, NC.

Many waterfalls in that area and beautiful country.

Unfortunately this a an off summer.

Til next year

Would like to see your waterfall pics Gary and Mike :this year the waterfalls are more accessible due to work done by Park Service after last falls storms, all 211 of them in this county.Yes,I do like bragging about Brevard. After living in many places in the US and other parts of the world ,this is with out any doubt the most peaceful place I have ever lived and will remain here. All are welcome.

We have a few small ones in the Cuyahoga National Park in northern Ohio. Nothing like the far west, but hey, I'm here Ron C., My wife and I are coming to NC in June to see the kids in Chapel Hill and the sight see. Are there some Park Service links you could share so we can find the way?

Thanks,

John Powers

Spring is scratching and clawing its way to Boone, NC as well. Two and a half weeks ago we had 5 inches of snow, 50 mph wind and 24 degrees. Now leaves are starting to show on the treees and the wild flowers are abundandt; crested irises, mayapples, star chickweed, trout lillys, ect.. We're seeing gold finches, cardinals, blue jays, rose breasted grosbeaks, and a half dozen or so small birds. We live well out of town and have deer, skunks, groundhogs, turkeys, red tailed hawks, blue herrons, and our dog Kali found a new friend here the other day.

John if you go to "National Forest in North Carolina" you will have a good listing by region and what is there to be seen, also under "National Park Service" just click on the state and it will give you a better idea than most maps or travel agents. If you are going to be along the Blue Ridge Parkway you could try "Transylvania County NC,Land of Waterfalls".For info, the Blue Ridge Parkway goes through the Pisgah National Forest and runs into the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.I will be in Chapel Hill next week also visting my 2nd year med student daughter who is taking all my film money.

Finally got a print of Carmac Falls. Shot with my 4x5 Anba on Tmax 100. Here the website for the place if anyone is interested in a nice bed and breakfast with waterfalls on the property.

Thankfully our days of supporting students are done. Step son Alex worked in Chapel Hill while his wife finished her masters degree. Now he is writing and acting while she works. Step daughter Jennifer, step grandson and son in law are working north of Denver, CO. We don't see either new family often enough, but they have picked prettier places to live than Cleveland, OH.

It looks like we will be waterfall hunting in Asheville, NC and Brevard for three or four days June 20-24. Then we will stop at Cheap Joes in Boone to fill my wife's paint box and on to Chapel Hill. We may hit Cheap Joes after the weekend of the 26th on the way home depending on how much we enjoy waterfall hunting. I’m retired and my wife is a teacher on summer break. After forty years of schedules it is fun to play it by ear for a change.

From what we read Brevard-Transylvania county have 200+ waterfalls. Can you suggest specific waterfalls or directions that have good light as opposed to tree canopy and are reachable maybe up to a half mile from the car with an 8x10 camera, in a baby jogger with 20" wheels and shock absorbers. A trail works, but stairs and rock cliffs slow me down. I am 65 years old and not a track star.

If you are going to be in either area we would love to hook up, but don't want to incontinence you.

Thanks for any thoughts you can provide.

John
