A great example of Art Deco. We need to protect this stuff at all costs from the City Hall vandals who think a replacement shopping mall represents progress.

When my mother was a teenager she used to watch the movie stars disembark from the then new station. It’s still quit a piece of architecture and well taken care of.

SG, thanks for sharing. I've not been there since my childhood days. My maternal grandparents lived in Santa Monica and during our stay over visits they took us to all the sites in the LA basin back then. Union Station, Santa Monica Pier, Angels Flight, POP, Marine Land, Brown Derby, Clifton's, Will Rogers SP, etc......Gosh, has it already been 60+ years ago since those days?............

The last ultra modern, state of the art rr station in USA was built in Cincinnati just in time to be obsolete with coming air travel. (Talk about foresight!) Fortunately, after some decades of abandonment much of its artwork was restored and became the new home of the natural history museum. I took train from station to NYC by New York Central in 1955.
Very interesting pictures. Archeological artifacts without living people. I wonder if anyone did a study while it was a living station.
Of course, LA being in CA, there is no reason Gov. Brown and Sacramento couldn’t spend $50-$60 billion to revive station with a couple miles of new track that goes nowhere.

Very nice. In 1958 with my father I had my first train ride from L.A.'s Union Station all the way to Maine and back. In the late 1970's and early 1980's I rode the Coast Starlight between L.A. and Portland. My last Kodachrome movie (in my refrigerator, undeveloped) is from my 1978 departure from that station to my new home in Portland.

One of the most awe-inspiring art deco buildings in L.A. was the onyx and gold Atlantic Richfield building. It was demolished and I think that's where the Arco towers now are. You can find photos of the old building on the internet. It was a crime that that building was demolished.


I lived in Venice as a kid. We'd go to the Pacific Ocean Park promenade and get pizza slices, but we couldn't afford to go in and go on the rides.

Clifton's, yes - I went to the one that had waterfalls inside.

Art Deco is my FAVORITE Art.
Regards Trains/Passenger Trains.....i wish we could turn the clock back. It was such a Glorious/Glamorous way to travel.
To think, while on the train, people (especially women) took time out of their day to Write Letters to friends and Family.!
Before airplanes took hold, and Super Highways were common......if you wanted to go from San Francisco to Atlanta, it simply took Several Days. Nobody questioned it.
Pennsylvania Station...what a crime, what a shameful crime against Art/Society and a beautiful way of life.
We spend A LOT of our tax dollars on The Wrong Things.....

This new law in EU that they cannot just take our data and sell it is annoying to many sites. They say: "if we cannot get your data, then we will not show you the content of you site". Well, internet is big enough, I don't need to see all pages .

Gosh, I graduated from the University of Redlands in 1973 and have to admit I didn’t know about the train station. OTOH, I was recently looking at some old negatives from my college yearbook photographer days, including shots of local businesses that took ads in the back pages of the yearbook (a common practice in those days of yearbooks) — I wonder if anyone in Redlands would be interested in seeing those now. And yes, I believe there was Redlands Camera...those were the days!
