Kodak Vision 3 (5219) test

I've had some Vision 3 movie film in my fridge for a little while. I was waiting for me to gain enough knowledge and practice with developing film at home before shooting it since the rem-jet would be a problem with commercial development. Yesterday I loaded a little of it into my Yashica Electro 35 GSN and shot a few photos.


This was exposed at 400 ASA. I soaked the film for 1 minute in 24 oz water with washing soda, then drained and washed 3 times, then developed in Caffenol for 15 minutes. The rem-jet came off with a tissue when hung up to dry with no problems.

So now that I know I can remove rem-jet at home the next big step is C-41 when I can afford it.

You can also mix your own ECN-2 developer, it will give better results than C-41 developer, see page 30: http://motion.kodak.com/motion/uploadedFiles/h2407.pdf . If you can't get Antifoggant AF-2000 anywhere, just leave it out.

I've been able to remove remjet backing with a tissue, but I did it before processing, in the dark. I think once you start processing with color chemistry at temperature you'll start to have issues with remjet sludging off the film.

Some people claim they develop in C-41 on spirals without problems and remove the remjet backing after processing, but this can be quite risky as some remjet probably will become loose and may stick to the emulsion side. On the other hand, the same risk is always there if you don't have the proper equipment to remove it.

But, there is no point to soak film in washing soda before processing if you are not going to remove the remjet before developer. Go straight to developer to reduce the risk of unwanted remjet loosening, or remove all remjet before processing (suggested, but it can be a bit tedious). Normal baking soda works as well.
