Kodak TriX 400 in 120 discontinued?

im glad its still around, i shoot tons of this stuff. id always just bought the single rolls because thats what the shop had but buying 5 roll packs isnt a problem as long as they don't raise the prices...

That would be true - except for the fact that when rollfilm is discontinued the single rolls are usually gone from manufacturer inventory before the multi-roll propacks.

Kodak may have discontinued the stuff altogether in 120 and this is just unsold inventory.

Having said that the oh-so-provocative statement - I haven't heard anything about Kodak discontinuing 120 B&W films of any kind.

The 120 single roll is available for 400 Tri-X, its US part number is 879 0180.
320 tri-x is sold only in 5 roll packs, US part number 862 8729. I got this off their web site. They don't have anything about it being discontinued far as I could tell by searching their web site. They also list it as being available in about 50 different countries including Lebanon. But they only listed European and African countries in the list. Maybe you ought to try to email Kodak Australia and see what they say.

I tried the new number on Kodak's site and it doesn't seem to produce any listings, but another call to a camera store confirmed they are also using the new number for ordering TX400 120 in single boxes. That 5 pak number listing in these threads is only for TXP 320 which is not the same film. That film is more for controlled lighting indoors in the studio, while TX 400 is for outdoor use and indoors with flash.

If you go buy Adorama web page the TRI-X 400 number for USA film made for international use is TX120I.

Anyway whichever number is right the film is still available in single packs.

B&H has it in stock, according to their web site. I wouldn't count on it lasting, however. I suspect that 220 black and white will soon be a thing of the past. At the very least, fewer retailers, especially local retailers, will want to stock it. (I have no information on this, it is merely an assumption based on the current state of things.)

The whole deal about TX 120 in OZ is that Kodak stopped distinguishing between 'grey market' film and 'official film'. It has never been a secret that all Tri X was made in Rochester, put in different boxes and sent all over the world. Kodak protected USA dealers by distinguishing between made-for-export-film and USA market. All that is over with: one number.

Nicole's camera shop guy probably panicked when he entered the old code into the computer and came up craps. Probably didn't read the Kodak notice annoouncing the change: which is recent. It can't effect stock on the shelves if it's just happened, can it ?

Anyway ( repeating the story ) if YOU call KODAK in ROCHESTER and ask, they'll explain it to you the way they explain it to me:

There will be no more TX 120 single rolls ( if there are some in a store, it's because Kodak didn't use the Wayback machine to take them off the shelves after they changed the policy ).

There will be 120 TX Pro Packs. There is ONE new number.

The NEW catalog number for TX120 pro packs ( 5 rolls ) is #818-8914

PLEASE ! If somebody gets a different story from KODAK ROCHESTER, please publish it and put us out of our misery.

The statement was that he could no longer find Tri-X in 220. He didn't differentiate between TX and TXP. Since he said "Suddenly I can't get Tri-X in 220" I am assuming that it is the TXP he was referring to since he clearly has been buying the stuff recently. I was only trying to address his particular issue of not being able to find the stuff. I do know that they are different films.

I called Kodak with that number you had mentioned above and that is for TXP 320. This is not the same film as TX 400. Again Kodak does not sell TX 400 in pro paks. I even asked them that and there is no packing like that as such. They only sell TX 400 in single boxes. The new numbers are given in a few posts back.

Not to beat a tired horse, but the place for info from Kodak is Rochester, even if Ontario is nearby. But thanks. Lots more reliable than " I talked to a guy waiting for a bus in Iowa that shot weddings in '73, and he said Tri X was no longer made."

Which is usually adequate qualification.

Yes sorry, I meant the pro version. I got a couple of hundred rolls with no trouble last year, but haven't been able to get any this year and have had to use colour. I only use it at this time of year, to take archaeological air photos of sites showing as differential ripening of crops, and I use B&W as it is more achivaly permanent.

In the UK try Mailshots - they break up fresh bulk packs anyway and I think are probably the cheapest. My experience with them has been very good and the film has always arrived promptly and well packed.

Unfair.

It's not fair to say if something is discontinued or not unless that comes from the manufacturer. Certainly not a camera store.

I was at a camera store recently and asked for a certain film, the person behind the counter (someone in the business for a long time) told me the film was no longer available. I told them they must be kidding. They again said you can no longer get it. I kept after him for a minute and what actually happened is Kodak said retailers must order a certain amount or Kodak won't fill the order.

Now that certainly shows sales are slowing, but it didn't mean the film was gone. Kodak was trying to save costs by not shipping 15 rolls to a small shop - maybe not an ideal situation, but until they say for certain if they are discontinuing a product its not yet doomsday.

And I think the sales person was trying to do a bit of damage control - it was easier to say they no longer made it than to say they weren't a big enough shop to sell it.

Well I did say that they were only one of the places that told me it was discontinued. In fact though, Kodak can be just as misleading. I used to use a lot of Panalure paper and tried to buy a big batch last year. All the pro photo dealers told me it had died, but Kodak's web site said it was still on the books and their British Pro help line told me it was still available. Eventually the US help line confirmed that it had really gone after first telling me that if it was on the web catalogue it must be available. Ho hum.
