I am blown away that not once did I ever get a notification of the end of Technidol, I would have got enough for my TP had I known. I have 108 8 oz packets....I need over 340 to soup all the Techpan I have in both 35mm and 120.

So now what? How can I even get close to what Technidol would have done? Rodinal 1+300?

I frequent this site often and never once did I see a single mention of it being gone, D__N IT!

I develop my 4x5 TP sheets in R09 (Rodinal) 1+100 8:00min. Works very well.

I have a roll of 120 I want to soup that was shot at 25. I will wait to see what others say since the Massive chart varies and says 7-9 minutes at 1+100 is for continuos tone / high contrast...

I was given some TP in 120 last year but I have not used it yet because I was not sure which developer to use.

From the last two posts, would I be correct in assuming Rodinal 1+100 for 8 minutes is for exposure at ISO 25?

IIRC, Formulary carries their own version of Technidol, TD-3 I think it's called.

You can use the above advise or consult The Darkroom Cookbook; a few reciped in there.

Yes, I have shot TP @ EI 25 and developed in Rodinal 1:100 8:00min continuous agitation on Unicolor Uniroller base. Follow the link in my previous post to have a look at my example.

I am hand agitating it, so I might try TD-3.

Any idea how grain compares between Technidol, TD-3 and high dilution Rodinal?

theres still plenty of technodol available on the market in sydney australia. while it has been discontinued surely it cant be hard to find?

The best I can do on ebay technidol is about $30 for a packet of 6 8oz units. There is a guy who will sell me 5 boxes for $155 shipped, that is like $10 per 120 roll I soup. One auction saw $76 for 13 packets....

The way I am shooting these films, TP, APX 25 and HIE in 120 and 35 is very slowly and cautiously, only a few rolls a year to dial them in right now. So the smaller doses of Technidol make more sense in terms of consumption. But TD-3, which I just ordered 10 boxes of the small stuff, well I have to soup 10-20 rolls within a year or it goes bad. But it is SO much cheaper.

For example, I have 6 120 backs for my hasselblad set up, all with different films. It usually takes me weeks if not months to shoot an entire roll of the rare stuff and it always ends up worth it. When I do out and shoot "big shows" in a few years, it will still be less than 10 rolls, so this is a long term thing too. And yes, I do shoot current stock like Pan-F quite often.

I found some tests a few months ago of Technical Pan in Rodinal I did years ago for a similar question on APUG and the results were not bad. At 1-120, the following times worked;
25 ISO 7mins
50 ISO 9mins
100 ISO 11 mins
The 50 and 100 were quite contrasty though the 25 was the closest to Technidol though still had to be printed a grade softer. If you are being extremely critical, the Technidol had slighty more shadow detail and was smoother, but I mean very critical! Maybe a similar time in 1-150 may be better. Certainly worth trying.

HC_110 also works, but I don't recall the dilution. Perhaps 1+64, dilution H; sonething like that. A call to Kodak would answer that, or the MDC.

I like to use C-41 developer for 8 minutes. It came from an old Photo Techniques article and it works very well.

Double and treble damnation. This is my notification. And why didnt I order a case last year?

I have tried Technical Pan with Rodinal and HC-110 with all manner of dilution and agitation schedule and with pinches of this and that. The results have been uniformly, unambiguously and completely unacceptable.

Acceptance is in the eye of the beholder: some folks like lots of contrast; some have a look they are going after; some have a religious revulsion to following standard procedure. My ideal 35mm TP negative produces a print that elicits 8x10 contact print. No, wait, you cant fool me, thats 4x5. Awfully good for 4x5, though. There is no issue with the contrast of the resulting print - it is just what you would expect gently treated 8x10 Tri-X to produce.

The closest I can come to Technidol is POTA. I haven't tried TD3. The Crawley/Beutler/Windisch/XRD-33.0112-SR7aWTF have all been worse than POTA in producing more grain and a loss of the 'large format contact print' look.

For those who havent tried Technidol, please try it while there is still some available. After that, experiment with Rodinal & Co..

I recently cooked some tech pan 120 film in technidol. Exposed at ASA50, developed each roll of 3 packs of technidol (instead of the normal 2) at 72F for 10 minutes. The film expired in 1987 and has been refridgerated for part of that time (the last 10 years or so at least).

Negs look great, but then I am making little platinum prints with them -- and the bit of base fog does not really matter. Who knows how old the technidol is!LOL!

The two Tech pan negs I have made Pt prints from look pretty good (no contrast agent), but still need a little refinement.

For long lasting homebrew I found the TEA version of H&W Control formulated by Tom Hoskinson to work well with microfilms Copex Rapid EI 25 (12 min 68F) and Adox CMS 20 EI 16 (9 min 68F),agitate continually every 10 sec. It's in this thread:
