Want to Buy Kodak Technical Pan

Hi All.

I am looking for Kodak Technical Pan in 120 format or 4x5. I have done the obvious search on eBay, and turned up a good amount, but thought I would ask here if any one here had any that they wanted to sell.

Wanted for a personal project, not sure how much I need, but will see what turns up I guess.

I saw that earlier, not sure I would be brave enough, and I don't have a film cutter, and the price is "mental". I was hoping to spend hundreds, not thousands.

Can you imagine though? That's big enough for 480 sheets of 8x10 ($5.21/sheet), or 960 sheets of 4x5 ($2.60/sheet), or 684 rolls of 120 ($3.66/roll). I don't even wanna think about how many 35mm that would do.

Can we get Dean Bennici in Germany to buy this up and dole them out to us?

It's interesting that the description is Technical Pan, while the box is plainly labeled "Panatomic X"

I was going through my freezer for a 'clean-out' the other day and found a few of 'bricks' of 35mm Tech Pan that I had forgotten I even had... the worst part being that I now 'do' almost no 35 mm anymore.

Hi Ken,

A brick is 10 rolls if I recall correctly. How many is a "few"? What do you want for them? I was really after 120 or 4x5, but would consider 35mm if the price was right. Let me know what you are wanting price wise and we can go from there.

A quick peek shows one 'brick' of 20 rolls that have been stored at -30°c... and while I was getting cold hands, I have the feeling there may be some more. I also 'found' some unopened 4x5" Tech pan (that I'll probably not even think about using either). I know I also have some 'packets' of the Tech Pan developer stored away in box in my darkroom. Might I ask your maximum price? While I'd like to be 'fair', I would not like to be 'taken to the cleaners'.... While I am NOT a fan of using eBay, I'm might be willing to 'give it a try' when I see the per roll there, ranges from around $10 to $12 and up. Then... there is packing and shipping to be take into consideration.

To be honest, I would tell you to put the 35mm on eBay. I am sure you will fine a taker eventually. As I said I am more interested in 120 and 4x5.

Everyone who has responded to my request gets the same question "what do you want for it?". The reason I ask this is that I presume that you know what it is worth. I don't really know because I can't find any (not 4x5, had more luck with 120) on eBay to compare to.

There is plenty of Tri-X, which seems to range from $75 for a 50 sheet box to $120 for a 100 sheet box.

There is plenty of T-Max which seems to range from $30 for a 25 sheet box to $130-$140 for a 50 sheet box.

The only thing I can see on eBay today that is comparable in terms of its rarity is this Vintage Kodak Professional Infrared Film 4 x 5" UNOPENED 25 Sheets 01/1994 which is $60 for a 25 sheet box.

There is a guy with some 8x10 Technical Pan, but he wants crazy money for it $800 a 50 sheet box. Not that I have a 8x10 camera anyway, just the 4x5.

Is your box a 25 sheet or a 50, or the even rarer 100? Do you only have the one, or are there a few? Once you tell me that, I will make you an offer, base on what we can both see is the going rate on eBay, and I will of course cover all postage costs.

I hope you think that is fair, it is a bit hard with films that don't come up often as there is not a lot to compare them to price wise, but I thought the IR was a relevant example, you don't see that too often.

Let me know the size (sheets per box) and how many boxes you have and I'll make you a good offer.

FWIW, I bought 8 or 9 sealed boxes of 25-sheet 4x5 Tech Pan (recent dates, in the mid-2000s, always frozen) on ebay in 2015 for $75-85/box or about $3 - 3.50 a sheet. Just as a point of reference. I have seen it go for more, and I thought I was getting a pretty good deal @ that price.

Remember when determining the "going rate" on ebay you should be putting more weight on the auctions that are actually "going" i.e. check the box to search on completed auctions and see what stuff SOLD for. Like with the 8x10 seller, people can dream up all sorts of asking prices on ebay but it doesn't mean that is truly the going rate until someone takes them up on it.

Looks like Ken and Jason are on-track for a good deal! Definitely hope it works out for you.

I keep thinking "What do you want it for?" because while Tech Pan definitely has its special characteristics, I find I can fulfill my "high resolution" desires with TMAX 100... and a fresh film has certain qualities that make it desirable. For example you can still get more if your project turns into a longer adventure.

I worry about fog with most expired films. Especially when it comes to specialty films like Infrared or high speed films like Tri-X. But slow films are a different story. One thing Panatomic-X has going for it is an apparent immunity to expiration (proven to myself through testing and use). I believe Tech Pan has the same virtue but haven't tested.

You will need to test, there is a phenomenon called "gelatin hardening" that PE explained to me might be behind my long developing times. Gelatin hardening doesn't cause fog but increases the development time. I think the phrase used to describe the effect is that the film "loses contrast" but to me it just means longer developing time.
