In my travels I have acquired a Kodaslide II stereo viewer. It is in great shape except the friction pad (used to move the slide back and forth for focus) is worn through in the center.

Has anyone repaired this? To me, it looks like I could remove the existing material and use a bit of foam tape of the right thickness.

You won't know until you try.
I would, and as you said foam tape of a similar thickness. The concern I'd have is the replacement tape disintegrating over time. Maybe rubber similar to a mouse pad could be more permanent?

I realize I'm about 4 years too late to help you, but perhaps this might help someone who's recently experiencing the same problem. It's not too hard to find an old leather camera case (either in your back closet or at a thrift store. I found the leather strap is just the right thickness and width...and since the strap I found had a buckle, it never missed the inch I cut off the end.
