Just got one of those thingie while going through a garage sale.
The guy was asking $5, we settled for $2

Now call me stupid, but how is this thing working? I just hooked it up to a tray
and connected the hose to the faucet but the siphon never worked: the water
level just went up past the siphon and over spilled (in my baththub mind you,
so no dommage).
Do I have to `fill up' the siphon when I turn on the water. If so how do I
do that?
Thanks!

Mine works just fine - you just have to arrange things so the outlet is below tray level. They are quite expensive new, the last time I looked and can be invaluable for the occasinal sheet film wash, or a single neg. that has been soaked in selenium or whatever and needs washing. I have to set mine up so the tray in which I am washing sits on top of 2 or three others so the outlet part is down low and the flow into the tray is near the bottom. H ope this helps. They are excellent for washing stuff.

If the water flow is too slow it will do just as you said it did. Try turning the flow up a notch or two and see what happens.

Turns out that I was a bit too timid with the water:
the siphon doesn't engage when the volume is too low,
but once it gets going I can reduce it and it keeps going.
