I just found a very nice working Retina 1a this morning. It is in great condition except for some missing paint on the back. I am fine with leaving it as is, but if I wanted to touch it up, what would I use?
Most of the camera paint I've seen from that era seems to be lacquer based. An auto body paint supplier should be able to sell you a touch-up bottle of a suitable black lacquer, or you might be able to get japanning lacquer from a woodworking supplier (but that might come in pints or larger).
I've used gloss model enamel from the craft supply store. I thin it and apply more than one coat. It's not perfect, but It's made several cameras presentable.
