I found this, reviews the glory days of KRL under Mees and colleagues. Really beautiful, EKCo. was the Apple, Microsoft of the early 20th century. You can view this for free if you sign up, no charges.

Interesting to note that 15 years after the formulation of D-76 , Mees says (p468) ,in 1941 " the filamentary silver is formed in situ from the solid silver bromide crystal without any solution of silver halide". By 1948, James had the different explanation accepted today:
