What would you offer for one?
I believe shipping them through USPS is prohibited. Both of mine came from unwitting eBay sellers that shipped USPS!Be care when shipping mercury thermometers. USPS penalty is expensive.
Thanks for the quick reply. I see one sold here a few months ago for $50 without the box. I also see eBay prices are very inflated. I would offer US$75 + shipping. Cheers
Ah, damn, I hadn't even thought of shipping restrictions. I'll do a bit of research and will PM you directly Chan.
I mean, I've ordered Patterson mercury thermometers from B&H, shipped to Montreal, so presumably it is possible. Thanks for raising the flag!
The Paterson thermometers won't have been mercury thermometers. Another, less restricted liquid would have been used.
So, you are in Montreal? I have one, but in Vancouver.
I have Paterson one that have tendency very often to break steam in a few places of most likely alcohol, so it needs quick dip in hot water (hotter than max temp) to remedy that break.
Not sure what causes it?
Yes, I am in Montreal. Currently doing some research regarding shipping Mercury. USPS and Canada Post will not accept mercury thermometers in any capacity it would seem. However, the couriers seem to (ground service exclusively) and if I'm interpreting the literature correctly, it would seem that small amounts of mercury contained in a device weighing less than 1lb do not need to be flagged as hazardous materials (and do not need the mountain of accompanying paperwork). That said, I'm sure shipping this domestically is far easier than internationally.
@gorbas, yours is a Type 3 Kodak Process Thermometer? Would you mind PMing me a few pictures (ideally with a handwritten timestamp for verification)?
I have to ask you a question, why do you need proof that someone has the thermometer? I think we should trust each other.
I just checked, it's #2. Sorry
What is difference between #2 and #3?
Second, just as a curiosity, is there anything special about these thermometers as compared to say a standard high grade mercury lab thermometer? I've been using the latter for pretty much all my darkroom work, primarily because with the right...connections...many places that have volumes of them are happy to give them away rather than disposing of them with the current push to eliminate mercury(although a lot of chemists also swear by even commodity-grade mercury thermometers as compared to similar grade spirit thermos, especially the red alcohol ones).
1) their points of factory calibration are well matched to the temperatures that are used in photo labs;
2) they are in robust metal housings and are large enough to be usable in processing lines such as deep tanks and dip and dunk machines.
They are both accurate, and suitable for workplaces where something "heavy duty" is called for.
