kodak hypo wash

I would like to try some toning using Kodak Rapid Selenium toner. The instructions call for using Kodak Hypo Wash ist. Is there any difference between using the kodak product and using something along the lines of Adorama "archival" wash? It appears to my quite possibly uninformed eyes that they do basically the same thing.

A 2% solution of Sodium Sulphite would work just as well and is much cheaper, it's the principle ingredient in most Wash aids.

Yup. And if one needs to complexify the simple and obvious, throw in some sodium bisulphite.

So it's safe to say that if I don't reuse hca and I wash negatives before treating after fixing I can safely use only a 2% sodium sulfite solution, skipping all other ingredients?

Yes, but in practice HCA isn't rally needed with negatives as the fixer washes more easily out of the gelatin, it;s far more important with fibre based prints were the semi-soluble silver-thiosulphate complexes for weak bonds with the cellulose in the fibres of the paper.

Sodium sulfite as well as serving as a hca also assures
an alkaline condition of films and papers prior to their
treatment in a selenium toner. If the fixer is alkaline
then a water rinse may suffice.

A teaspoon of sodium carbonate in a liter of water
should do just as well. Kodak and Ilford only
offer acidic fixers. Dan

If you are going to try Selenium Toner and you are using FB paper, it is worth while using a Hypo Wash (of what ever flavour you choose) both before and after toning.

Doing so avoids staining - which can sometime appear only as the print dries which is a complete PITA
