Kodak Gold 200 vanishing act

Why is B&H Photo out of Kodak Gold 200 (seemingly forever) while it's easy as pie to get on Amazon for $7 more and free shipping? I don't want to pay 12.33 ea. for it, but to get free shipping at B&H I have to order more. That's fine by me since they'll be $10 ea. I just can't get it.

Is there another source besides B&H where I can get it for the same price as B&H or is Amazon the only choice?

Is there another comparable film to Kodak Gold 200? I've heard so many conflicting things about film that I have no idea what to believe. What I do with film does not justify buying Portra and it's ilk.

A couple of years ago I ordered Gold 200 from well-known mail order camera shop and they shipped "the other Kodak 200 - Colorplus". Worst film I ever used. They were not apologetic or willing to remedy the situation. Buy from the most reputable source possible and one that you have san ability for return if they don't send what you ordered.

But have you tried ColorPlus? I don't like it but a lot of people report that they do.

I don't mind paying the prevailing price as long as it's the lowest prevailing price. I haven't used Colorplus but also haven't heard much good about it. I like your advice about buying from a reputable source. Always important.

Based on some quick research, I believe you are correct. Thank you! I just bought 6 rolls of it from B&H.

FWIW, my impression is that B&H only buys product to re-sell if they can get it for a very favourable price that gives them an opportunity to be a price leader in the marketplace.
There is at least one vendor on this site who cannot buy many products on a wholesale basis for a price as low as some B&H retail prices.

Another current factor is the upsurge with younger folks shooting film, the camera shop closes to me has gone all film, they are selling a lot of color film, a lot. They use to use their film processor once or twice a week, they now have 3 which they run 7 days a week, there is always film hanging. Most is scanned. If they get a shipment of Porta it's gone in a day. Kodak Gold and rebranded Fuji, sells out as well. He is also selling used high end point and shoots, sometimes 4 or 5 a day go out the door. My guess is that Kodak was not prepared for this level of interest then along came COVID.

I checked Austin Camera which is fairly local and they were out of most everything. Demand is a good thing.

Please let us know what the edge markings say. The articles with the comparison of curves, etc seem compelling but none of those articles seemed to show the edge marking, which I would expect to say "Kodak" if it really Gold200.

Ok will do. I’m not sure why it couldn’t be completely rebranded to Fujifilm, edge markings and all, though.

If Fuji bought an entire roll or rolls and then for the loading it might say Fuji, if someone has access to an older minilab it will read the edge code as Kodak 200 likely gold or possibly Kodacolor 200.

I wonder if it's just because it sits on Amazon's shelf in some depot. The film could be there for a year before they pull it for an order. Meanwhile, the expiry date keeps approaching.

I had a worse experience with batteries I ordered from them. The expiry date on the batteries were like around five months earlier than the current date I received them. What made it really crazy is that the blister pack was dated three years earlier. The dates didn't match. And these were I believe from Duracell as the supplier. That's not just leaving them on a shelf. Dates should not mismatch between the package and product. I can't believe Duracell mismatched the dates in processing nor shipped three-year-old batteries.

I've lost a lot of confidence in Amazon. I don't think they know who they're buying from to resell, nor do they care. So they could be selling a lot of knockoffs. Also, you never know how long stuff sits in their warehouse getting stale.
