Kodak expired film offer via flickr

Well, if you look at the last giveaway, the film was 3+ years expired, so I see this as a reasonable proposition.

Note that this individual says she "works with Kodak" not "for Kodak" so this old reference is probably not from Kodak. Also she cannot spell refrigerator.

Kodak would insist on editing all posts and checking spelling and the note would be provably from Kodak.

So wouldn't they be the exact people who would be willing to pay for fresh film.

Not exactly. We are talking about people that may buy an Holga also. I'm sure they would pay for fresh film if they need to avoid side effects of expired film.

And since it's free, I promise I won't be upset if I get horrible pictures.

I had an email last night that I'm being sent 10 rolls. Will update here when they arrive.

nothing yet. when did you all of you email them? I felt like I was one of the early ones. Oh well, it was free anyways so I can't complain about not getting any.

I received a confirming email that they are sending me film Friday.

I wonder what they are sending? Very nice of them, whom ever them is. It is signed Kodak.

From the Ketchum website:

"At Ketchum, we’re inspired by the belief that one can use communication to change the world and the way it responds to brands, reputations and ideas.

This belief has led to enjoyable and long-standing relationships with our clients, who entrust us with many of the best known brands in the world – and with the up-and-comers that will be tomorrow’s top brands. It drives us each day to meet the needs of our clients with a level of service, insight, creativity and deep industry knowledge that sets Ketchum apart."

So, Kodak is a client and Ketchum appears to be carrying out their 'belief' as stated above.

So, I got my 10 rolls today. I got a brick of Portra 400 VC, dated 2/2009. Each box has "SAMPLE" printed on it. Also enclosed was a roll of Ektar and an Ektar info sheet (printed on Endura Metallic). Shipped from Ketchum-Kodak, New York, NY.

So, if I had to hazard a guess, I'll say it was expired Portra 2 sample rolls that never got sent out?

I had an interesting mix - 3x Portra 160VC; 3x Portra 160NC; 2x Portra 800; and 1 roll of unexpired Ektar 100.

Seems to me that this is mainly a marketing ploy to get people to use the new Ektar 100 film - but I'm very happy to get any free film!

I was suspicious of it at first, as this is totally unlike Kodak in the past. I think this is a good move and a novel approach.

Really great Kodak would do this. I wonder how much epired film they throw away when something sold very slowly.

I don't think they are giving away slow moving product. All of the boxes I've seen from this giveaway say "SAMPLE" on them and are labeled "Not for resale". I think it was old promo films that never got handed out. Minus the free roll of Ektar.

The film I received is not that old, as late as 12/2008. Allmarked as Sample.

  • 4 Portra 160NC
  • 1 Portra 800
  • 5 Portra 400VC
  • 1 Extar 100 fresh dated
The extra Extar 100 was really a nice touch. I never used any of these films before so am anxious to work with them.

I applaud them, yes, but one must also ask "What took you so long?"

Ketchum is a competitor of companies like Carat, Havas, etc. I can tell you that right now that industry is collectively sitting on its hands waiting (hoping, praying, etc.) that marketing budgets for online and offline channels recover.

Typically these outfits are on a retainer; one would expect Ketchum to be doing *something* at this stage to exploit social media sites to promote their client's products.

If it took until 2009 for this to occur to them, I suspect they could not invent fire if one handed them matches...

I applaud them, yes, but one must also ask "What took you so long?"............

I may be mistaken however, I believe they did this last year also. Do to the expiration dates on my film, can't see them doing it much earlier otherwise, it would not be expired film.

Except of course, the Ektar 100, that was a nice touch.

Thank you Kodak, from a long time customer.

I got my package today. Ten rolls of 160NC (08/08) and one Ektar. Keen to try the Ektar and I'm glad I got 10 of the same film as I like to standardise things.

My parcel was delivered yesterday, 10 rolls of Portra 400NC & one roll of Ektar. The Portra boxes all have SAMPLE printed on them & all have the same expiry of 12/08.
I'm looking forward to using the film & posting some results on flickr. Many thank to Kodak for this.
