In Kodak's Elementary Photographic Chemistry (1934) this formula is listed as
Universal paper developer, for amateur contact prints and enlargements.
For fast chloride papers such as Velox, 1+1, develop 45s
For chloride papers such as AZO 1+2, develop 45s
For bromide papers 1+4, develop no less than 90s

This formula is very similar to Kodak Dektol (which has not had its formula released to the public by Kodak). A lot of photographers use this developer.

Kodak Dektol may have some slight differences from this D-72 formula (addition of a calcium sequestrant, for example) but the results on developed prints are visually identical - in my experience.
