kodak c 41 homemade kit..

hello friend next time i d like to buy kodak c 41 kit with separate bleach and fix... i have check this on morco.uk......correct me :

C41 Developer - for non rep. use to make 5 litres
C41 Bleach - for non rep. use to make 2 x 5 litres
C41 Fixer to make 2 x 5 litres

this is the "right" kit that i should buy?

could i prepare 500 ml of solution or i should prepare the whole 5 litres?

I'm not sure about the specific products, since you've not provided very precise references. (Also, morco.uk is an invalid domain name.) If you can paste a URL (or URLs) to the precise product(s) you plan to buy, somebody can probably provide a better response.

That said, for C-41, you do need those three items -- developer, bleach, and fixer. (Some third parties substitute a blix for the bleach and fixer, but Kodak uses separate items.) You should also probably get some stabilizer or final rinse. (Most new films can use either, but some older films need a stabilizer for best keeping qualities.)

Most C-41 products, including Kodak's, come as liquids, so it is possible to mix up smaller quantities (250ml, 300ml, 500ml, or whatever) and keep the rest in the bottles.

You need a stabilizer or final rinse. This is an essential step.

For older films, the formalin stabilzer actually stabilzes the dyes as well as prevent fungus and mold growth. The newer final rinse from either Kodak or Fuji contain a fungicide, mold inhibitor. This is essential in color films. All of the organic goodies and no silver makes a good breeding ground for bugs. The new dyes do not need formalin to stabilize them in the C-41 process, but E6 still uses formalin in the bleach pre-bath.

The name of new Kodak "stabilizer" is called Kodak C-41 Final Rinse. It is very cheap. One bottle will last you a few years and it's only about $5.00. Kodak C-41 developer has three bottles called Part A, B and C. You mix Part A with water, then add Part B and add Part C. The last step is to add more water to bring it to the spec volume. I think this is his 2nd question. I may be wrong though.

The old Stabilizer will work with old and modern C41 films, but the latest Final Rinse will not work properly with older film, only with modern films. Before you ask when the cutoff date was, note that this was posted by someone else here on APUG with a reference to the Kodak web site. I do not have the reference.

PE, I think someone mentioned that all current Kodak Portra, probably including Ektar, line of films should use the Final Rinse. I think it is most likely correct. If I am not sure about my older films I will use Stabilizer, which is hard to find these days.

You can mix your own stabilzer, but the final rinse is proprietary.

Can you advise where to buy Formalin? Can I find it in pharmacies like Walgreen? Can you advise how to mix my own stabilizer again? Thanks a lot, PE.

Stabilzer is approximately the following:

1. Mix up 1 liter of Photo Flo 200 as directed.
2. Add 10 ml of 37% Formalin solution to this.

Use for 1 minute as a Stabilizer at the recommended temperature.

Thanks a lot, PE. I now wrote it down in my photo notebook. I will try to find Formalin from several possible sources, including pet supply stores. I will be careful in handling it. I do have some Kodak VPS-3 films that need to use the stabilizer.
