This might be the dumbest question around here in a while, but here goes...

I currently have around ten rolls of Kodachrome 64 and 25, expired in 2002/2003. It comes with development included, so I have to shoot it before the end of November. That just ain't gonna happen.

So... Can I develop it myself in ordinary B&W chemicals?

If I were you, I'd offer it to our non-US members. Why waste it shooting it as B+W?

Turn the film into glorious full-colour projectable slides by any means possible to you. Trade it, even give it away, or organize a group outing.

A fellow APUG member here in Toronto found himself in a similar situation, so he organized a 'fall colours' walk in the park. He managed to get a dozen people out, selling them his overstock rolls (at less than his cost) rather than letting the clock run out on him. I joined them and shot my last roll.

No one wants to hear about fine wine being poured down the drain, so hop to it!

To answer your question:

Yes you can. I have developed Kodachrome 64 to B/W by way of CaffeinC developer, a mix-it-yourself solution, where you buy washing soda, vitamineC (100% powder, not pills) and instant cofee, mix it after a specific recipe and develop.

I ahve done it and it works.

Only trouble I had that noone on the caffeine group could explain, was a pitch black layer that did not come off at first, I discovered that when I was about to dry the film. Quickly reimmeres the film into the water and applied a little force with wetted fingers and the black layer came off, the negatives where just fine.

JUst look up the APUG group for this for further explanations, in there is also a link to a guy in germany who is developing this to an art, but the guy in question has never developed neither K64 nor K25 to B/W.

I have another roll sitting here, that came3 with an old camera, that may or may not contain images, I will do this roll when I have extra space in a tank, the amazing thing wioth caffenol is that you generally get away with the same temp/time for nearly all films!

Don't forget that the last date for Dwaynes to process Kodachrome is actually 30th December.

30th Nov is the final date for Kodak in Switzerland to receive process-paid European film. So if, like me, you're in the UK, you can still mail film direct to Dwaynes for the extra month. You just have to pay the extra for processing ($10?), which I'm personally willing to accept for the extra few weeks of shooting.

I would definitely try to find someone that wants to shoot it in color before wasting it in B&W. That being said, it can be done, but it yields a high-contrast negative, and the rem-jet is a real PITA to remove without scratching the base.

Now, of course, if you can't find anyone, I have a freezer full of B&W film to trade...

I can buy a few from you if you can take paypal and ship to Hong Kong. Never saw even 1 slide of Kodachrome in my life (except on the web). Quite like to have one just for the record.

Any chance?
