Kindermann Processing Tank Size?

I just got a stainless steel Kindermann processing tank that was described on eBay as being for "35mm". There was nothing in the description or photos to indicate the size, but I thought the proportions looked a little odd. So I asked the seller if the tank was for one roll of 35mm film or two. The reply was "1" (only that). A one-reel tank for 35mm metal reels is what I was looking for, so I bought it.

But the tank is huge - an inch bigger in diameter than the 2-reel Kindermann I already have - and also as tall as my 2-reel tank. See photo which shows one of my 35mm Hewes reels in the eBay tank. I was specifically looking for a tank to be used with no more than 300mL developer, so I am returning this one.

Curious about what this tank was designed for, I tried to find an online resource that might show the Kindermann product line with dimensions, but no luck. Does anyone know of such a resource?

Maybe it's for 70mm? 70mm film reel diameter is 17 cm or 6 ¾”

Nikor made 220 tanks that were bigger than 35/120

70mm reels are HUGE because they took 15 feet of 70mm film I think.

Measure the tank you got. If it's about 4.5" in diameter, and 3" height, it's probably for one oversized 220 reel. If it's 4.5" diameter and ~6" height, it's for two oversized 220 reels or one 4x5 reel. I know Nikor made these but I don't know that Kindermann did. They are not very common, so if it was inexpensive you might want to keep it. Admittedly, it's not clear what the use case for 1 oversized 220 reel is now, although one could develop two 120 films on it. The two-220 or 4x5 tank is a little more general.

I did measure the tank before I packaged it for return shipping, but not precisely. I believe the diameter was just under 4.5 inches (about 114mm), and the height was a little less than 3.5 inches (about 88mm).

Presently, I am shooting 35mm only, so I have no use for such a big tank. I just wanted to rule out the possibility that this tank might be designed for some kind of 35mm reel which I have never seen or heard of. This eBay seller lists a lot of camera gear, so it seems like they would be more knowledgeable, but apparently not.

Order a new SS tank from B&H or Freestyle, save yourself a headache. Single reel 35mm SS tanks take 8 fluid ounces (not ML), double reel tanks take 16 fluid ounces, double reel tanks also works for a single 120/220 reel. Modern 220 reels windings are spaced very close together using a finer gauge wire than 120 reels and fit the same tank. I would stay away from tanks with rubber or plastic lids, they wear faster and leak, get all stainless. If you insist on shopping used look for a NIKOR tank.

Thanks for your reply. I already have one 16 oz stainless tank - a Kindermann which I bought used, and it works well.

I usually wait until I have two rolls of 35mm film before processing. But typically, those two rolls will be different films with different processing times. So I have been using the 16 oz tank with the loaded reel on the bottom and an empty reel on top. And about 450mL of developer. That has been working well for me. But after the first film, I have to dry the tank and reels before going back into the changing bag to load the second film.

There are two reasons I want a second tank:
- I think it would be more efficient if I could load each film into it's own tank, so I could start processing the second roll immediately after the first. And,
- I have some Ilford Ifosol 3 developer in the Simplicity packaging which makes 600mL per packet. If I divide that into two 300mL aliquots, I am somewhat hesitant to use that amount in the 16 oz tank. It will probably work, but I'm not sure how having the extra empty space in the tank might affect agitation? Looking at older discussions here on Photrio, about half of the members say you need only enough solution to cover the bottom reel. And the other half say, No way, you must run the 16oz tank (almost) full.

Eventually, I hope to concentrate more on shooting one film, and then I will be able to develop both rolls at the same time in the 16oz tank. But for now, I'd like to have both a one-reel tank and a two-reel tank.

When I took a medium format photography class a few years ago, the university had a variety of processing tanks - all stainless steel tanks with rubber/plastic lids, but several different brands. It was hard to find a combination of lid+tank that fit well together. Since I already have one Kindermann tank, I thought it might be best to make my second tank the same brand in hopes that the two lids will be interchangeable(?) BTW, judging from what I saw in the university darkroom, the Kindermann rubber lids seem to be lasting a lot longer than the generic brands. But I will be on the lookout for a Nikor rtank with a stainless steel lid, as well.

You can process a single reel of 35mm in your 120 tank, place the reel with film in first then place an empty reel on top, fill with 8 ounces of chems, agitate as normal.

It is the "Spinal Tap" version of the Kindermann steel tank. .
I think gorbas has a 70mm reel that would fit that tank for sale in the Classifieds.

One of the issues with used stainless tanks with stainless steel lids is that they are often mismatched and because of that they leak. A new tank can avoid that. But if tank, lid, and cap are not mismatched, used is fine. Replacement rubber (probably actually plastic) tops are available. I haven't had any issues with them fitting, but I suppose it could be an issue. I just use them on tanks that I believe initially came with rubber tops; I assume if the tank has straight sides, it was designed for a rubber top.

I ordered a <Samigon Plastic Cover for all Stainless Steel Tanks> from B&H - just in case my old Kindermann lid ever fails - and I can report that lid does fit my Kindermann tank.

This one at 4.5 inches diameter was a tank for one oversized 220 reel, not for the 70mm reels that gorbas has.

Plastic tops for steel tanks work fine generally. Occasionally one breaks after 20 years. There are replacement plastic lids and caps for $5-6 from B&H or Freestyle. Hopefully they'll still be available in another 20 years. Steel lids work ok too - older ones may leak a little, but also, the steel caps have a tendency to pop off and get lost.

The Kinderman tops last pretty much forever.
