I just took delivery of a Kiev 88 but after a few tests the back started misbehaving.

I can't wind the film manually with the back. The body will advance the film so it is somewhat usable but it's not great.

I can try to fix it but before I screw it up further, can any user inform me of the correct behaviour of the winder? I didn't get enough time to use it before it failed.

On my back: a) If the counter is at anything other than "1", it spins clockwise without a sound and doesn't engage the spool, and turning counterclockwise advances the frame count. b) When it reaches "1" it won't turn CCW, makes a ratchet sound CW and doesn't engage the spool.

I think b) is correct, but should also apply to all frame numbers. Passed "12" it should turn CW to engage the spool and turn CCW to reach "1". Is that right?

It was the usual suspect: the clutch spring between the gears broke at the bend near its attachment hole. Pull the spring end, bend it, insert in hole and bend again. Easier said than done. Also watch out for the longer screw that holds the RHS cover. It's attached to another spring hook.

Hi Oapoli,
I have the exact same issue I am trying to repair. How did you remove the RHS cover? I can't see how it comes apart? I removed the 3 screws from inside too? It won't move at all?
Thanks D

Years ago Shutterbug magazine had an extensive review of the Kiev 88, it would jam, they whacked it against a bench and that took care of the problem.

When I've had issues with my 50 year old Hasselblad backs I've freed them up with a couple drops of Kodak movie film cleaner. Some people use Ronsonol.
