You are fortunate that you don't live in Canada.

My 9 and 11 yr. olds are fully immersed in the beast that is minor hockey. 9 hours every weekend starting at 6 am. and another 4-6 hours during the week.

I wouldn't want it any other way!

It's the same everywhere... only the weather and the sport changes. Basketball just ended with a disappointing loss in teh first play-off game. Little league and high school baseball drafts have been completed; practices and scrimmage games have started. We spend the weekend and several evenenings per week in the park eating fast food. At least we are together having fun. I wouldn't have it any other way either!

Okay, to keep this becoming too much of a "cute kid" thread, here is a not-so-cute image of my boys several years ago:

4x10 negative (300mm lens)
Scanned carbon print

On a historic note, that little bit of something in the water on the right is one of the last remains of the USS Milwaukee (C21) where is grounded attempting to tow a submarine off the sand in Dec. 1916; http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/c21/c2105.jpg

Also, do any of your kids do film work?

None of my children or grandchildren are interested in analog photography. They are into their i-phones and i-pads totally.

Not a good sign for the rest of us... I really feel like I should at least get down the formulas for making basic B&W emulsions and base somehow, I have a feeling that ultimately when I'm old, if I'm even legally allowed to use the chemicals, the only thing I'll be able to make are wet plates since glass will be available long after film base has been discontinued...

Tequila sounds like a good option!

Wet plate may not be due to the fact that it uses ether and is quite flammable.

My kids don't like chemicals.

If a couple knew what it was like to raise children instead of what they think it will be like, there would be no next generation. The delusion is a result of genetic evolution to preserve the next generation.

Oh my. Don't let them know that all water on the planet is contaminated with dihydrogen monoxide, which can be fatal when inhaled in small quantities. Or that all salt water contains hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. And that all helium balloons contain alpha and beta particles.

Man, you shouldn't be too much worried.
I have no children and yet the prospect of getting up at 7:00 scares the hell out of me!

Not necessarily... but I suspect my kids would be a bit lonely.

Love my guys, now 9 and 13. Yes, I am years behind in my printing backlog, and the negs are what you get while going with the flow that is family life.

Consider signing on for a postcard exchange or group print exchange.
Then there is a fixed deadline to put something out.

You will be experienced at mutli tasking and breaking big tasks into manageable bites to advance between interupptions that are usually called parenting moments.
Kids gives you that skill in spades (or can) .

I find that postcard exchanges are about the only me time I can claim to get into the darkroom at some months of the year these days.

Anyone remotely capable of saying "sleep is over rated" just needs a lot less of it than I do. It's one of life's greatest things. If I get enough good sleep I can handle whatever comes along. Not enough or not good enough quality of sleep and the slightest thing is insurmountable. Americans in general don't get enough rest.

Explains my wacky brain! Whenever I want to have a printing session, it requires me to miss a night's sleep and stay up for 36 hours or more straight. Sometimes I can sneak in a couple hours of sleep in that period. I use to have two to three printing sessions a week, now it is one every couple of weeks.

Thanks, Vaughn - I think that study starts to explain a lot. I wish they'd also look at interrupted sleep. I sometimes get close to 7 or 8 hours a night, but never in a solid chunk. As for the immune system effects, I know my asthma has been worse since having Nate and getting less sleep (I don't think it's just age).

I just hope I can get him into hiking enough that he'll stay safe in the woods with me so I can take him along.
