In Toronto and elsewhere Canada I rarely see anyone with any film camera... Mostly DSLRs on any kind of events.

Slightly post kid here,

A lot of us who grew up with film use film on our off time. We own DSLRs for serious stuff but carry a proper camera for fun times, and always have some sort of compact in our pocket.

Art, you saw more people with a film camera at that one event than me (and many other here) in ten years.

The latter of course puts that renaissance in perspective again. Well, I have to be the spoilsport again...
Anyway, I'm sure you enjoyed that sight.

I'm 33 but I consider myself as part of the "kids". I grew up with disposables and APS, then digital arrived and we just accepted it without much thoughts. Until about 18 months ago, I had not used film since 2006.

Depending on the type of seriousness. For anyone working on individual projects, or longer term commercial work, that is not constrained by time (i.e. sending photos to publishers tomorrow), particularly in the more art side of photography, film is arguably more serious!

Not to paint a stereotype of the film-camera-hipster thing, but I can only remember a few times where I've laid eyes on a non-hipster with a film camera in years. I saw a guy with a Mamiya 6 a few years ago, but other than darkroom friends, you rarely see them. If you lived near an art school, you'd probably see some kids with them.

AKA paid work.

These discussions always make me think of a group of old neolithic flint knappers reminiscing about the good old days before others had discovered copper/bronze.

The best kind, getting paid to do what you would do anyway because you love it.

FYI, I saw a good dozen non-hipster young people using film cameras at the Winter X Games last week.

Overall I see about double the amount of young people using film cameras in the past 5 years than I did the previous 10.

But do you see more people doing so?
Even I see a rejuvination.

To be fair, seeing someone with a film camera might just trigger the hipster labeling center in your brain. I know I've been called a hipster more than a few times while walking around with my Pentax K1000. I'm a Gen Xer. I'm way too old to be a hipster. I don't even know any hipsters personally. That camera belonged to my father and I've been shooting it since the late 90's. But when strangers see me out and about with that thing, somehow I'm a hipster, and when I tell them I'm not, they say that's the most hipster thing I could have said.

No judgement on my part. I'm primarily a Nikon F(E,A,M, etc) user. I just don't see many 55 year olds with film cams anymore, it's mostly young bucks. I have a friend that could be shooting professionally because he's a really good digital photographer. He used to be a pro, and then switched to film, somewhat under hipster impulses, and for various factors, his productivity has really stalled. I respect the desire to learn, but he has this, "digital sucks" mentality. Where ya at in OK?

I'm trying to integrate film into my paid work. Some clients want that classic look, I got a few bites.

My apologies. I wasn't meaning to imply judgement on your part. I was just saying that in general, the hipster label gets thrown around a bit too often these days. When I'm getting hit with it, things have gone too far!

I'm from OKC, by the way. Thunder up!

This visceral hate is sad, there is a lot of overenthusiastic folks who feel the need to hate/dislike what others choose because it’s different from their own choices. It’s the same everywhere, canon haters, nikon haters, pentax haters, leica haters, film haters, digital haters, and the list goes on. Hell, I’m member on a shaving forum, there’s a 3 way feud between straight, safety & cartridge users¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

There’s no way out of this, you are confirming the hipsterism whether you defend yourself or stay silent haha I gave up a long time ago.

I like all brands and all forms of imaging. I used to despise things like Polaroid image manipulation until I saw a book with wonderful examples and tried it myself. On things I used to hate, I've turned totally around.

There's a shaving forum? Sounds like hipsters.

*forumS, there's many of them haha I could show you but you'll end up having to explain to your wife why you purchased 20 soaps, as many aftershave, a 150 bucks brush & a customized razor with you name engraved on the handle.

Copper and bronze are completed overated. I’ve no use for them save copper sulfate for toner.
