A very interesting article of the way in which Keith Taylor prints tri color gum for Cy DeCosse. It's of course impossible to judge in the magazine, but from what I could tell, the work and printing was stunning, as we'd expect from Mr Taylor.

Great reading!

I wonder how he makes such large negatives?

I got to see the entire body of work Keith had made for Cy DeCosse at what I think was the final show at the much missed John Stevenson Gallery in NYC. It was absolutely gorgeous! The article in VC is a good one. Don, the digital negative step in the sequence used for the production of this work is described in the article. Yes, a digital negative is a part of a very hybrid process! Suck it up...it's the way it is.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but Keith and I have talked and as long as the schedue works, he'll be teaching a workshop at next year's Photostock gathering.

Do you know what he will be teaching?

Thanks,

Bill,

Two things:

1. That'll be a hell of a workshop! Keith's just an amazing printer that can teach anybody a lot.
2. You're up and running, AND with a sense of humor! When did you move from Michigan to Meeshegan?

Yep, they are digital negatives. Separations, actually.

Oh God, say anything but digital negatives. The august leaders of APUG will shoot you dead with their pulverizing ray gun for that kind of comment!!

Frankly I would move soon if possible. You and our family may be in grave danger.

I've seen these prints as well, and they are excellent.

I've asked Keith about his technique over on hybridphoto.com, and he's discussed it there--

I can see the little red dot of a pulverizing ray gun laser-sight jumping around on my body right now, so I'll have to type fast and leap quickly back into lurker mode, but Sandy's correct, I have imagesetter separations made because of the large image size - 20x27". For everything else - platinum and gravure - I make inkjet negs using QuadTone RIP or PDN -- from film, 120 Rolleiflex negs.

For anyone in the Twin Cities who may be interested, I'll be talking about my photography and the processes I work with on the 18th of August at the Minneapolis Photo Center - www.mplsphotocenter.com.

Now, back to the shadows...

Keith.

I went to the Stevenson Gallery in NYC a few years ago and I have to admit that it was one of the most moving photographic experiences of my life. I went to look at platinum prints specifically because I had never seen any truly professional prints up close. I was disappointed to see none on display, although I liked everything else. When I was about to leave, the proprietor (Stevenson himself?) asked how I liked the gallery. I expressed my mild disappoint to which he replied "Why didn't you ask?" For the next hour, my wife and I were treated to a private exhibition of the work of Cy DeCosse, both platinum and colour. I was almost speechless. I had never seen anything quite like it. I am really sorry to hear that the Stevenson Gallery is gone.

I heard Beth Dow talk last night at the Minneapolis Photo Center last night, was a great talk. As contemporary photographers go, Beth is right in the top group for me. Both Beth and Keith have a selection of their work hanging up stairs. Well worth stopping in if you haven't seen their work and Keith's stunning printing in person.

We'll have to work that out. I'm honored he would give it the consideration. We're working on facilities for next year and that will have an influence as will Keith's ability to make it over. I am hoping. (wink, wink... nod, nod)
