Keeping Glycine

I recently learned that a solution of phenidone in ethylene glycol will keep almost indefinitely, Could the same be applied to glycine/glycin? My query is about solubility and, of course, activity.

I've had really good luck freezing it. I had some last for four years I think it was. I kept the lid taped up and left it inside the black plastic bag it came with. After using a little here and there, in the end it was only slightly off colored, but minimal, and still worked fine. That doesn't answer your question about making a solution, but maybe answers the part about making it last.

I also wonder if there is some relevancy to a similar "keeping" perception about amidol, ie that old, discolored amidol has lost its potency when, in fact, practical experience of a respected printer revealed that 100 year-old amidol that he had a supply of worked just fine.

I have some 10 year-old glycine which is now gray. Think I'll mix some up and just give it a try.

Its glycin btw, glycine is not a developing agent.

It doesnt keep as well in solution as it does in the freezer, I know that. If really long storage is your goal, freeze it. I've had Ansco 130 last for a couple years but frozen "powder" lasts much longer.

Once glycin turns brown it will stain paper. Few people will find that desirable so its activity at that point is moot.

I used some really old brown Glycin once to make some paper developer. It stained the paper a little like Wayne said, but it looked kinda nice. It had a bit of a rose color to it.

Currently, I plan to order 100gms of fresh glycin from PF. Will then mix up 2 batches of 130 containing, respectively, "old" and "new" glycin and post the results.

I emphasize that comment above. Glycine is not the same as glycin.

IIRC, it may be needed to react glycin with TEA first to get it to dissolve in glycol. This is what is done to get metol to dissolve in glycol.
