K-14 (Kodachrome) and Cibachrome Print Possibility in Berlin, Germany

Hi,

I have been speaking with Uli Hagel in Berlin and he is willing to implement K-14 (Kodachrome) development and Cibachrome printing if there is interest. If anyone is regularly using or wanting any these services let me know.

I"d love to shoot Kodachrome again and get it developed in-country. I suppose Mr. Hagel, running a custom lab as he is, knows what he is in for. It's not only the multitude of baths, but also the strict process control.

What would be really interesting is if he would be willing to look at 120 format Kodachrome that often lives in the back of peoples freezers or Ebay.

Is he looking to be running a minilab, or is he going to really make a rod for his own back and do it by hand?

Yes, how is Mr Hagel going to do this? The K-lab ready-to-use chemistry is not on offer any more. And the K-14 process chemistry has been described here as tricky.
To my understaning it means more than installing one of the two processors.

Its a great idea until you get into the logistics of actually doing it. (K-14 processing). Cibachrome (Ilfochrome) printing is far more practical for a custom lab to do, although the raw materials are very expensive.

Good luck on the K14. Doing it by hand is not practical for any large business.

I don't live in Germany, but any increase in Kodachrome proccessing capability to extend the life of the film is reason to celebrate!

See above—the bag-in-box chemistry for these processors is no longer available—it would have to be something else. I'm thinking some sort of custom dip-and-dunk machine, but the re-exposure steps might be tricky.

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to Kodakchrome...am I right in thinking that if this became a reality then people could develop K14 in Europe?

Needless to say, I would be in!

I'm sure that a reliable European Kodachrome processing service would be welcomed by those who, like me, have stopped using the film because of the long turnaround time and inconsistent results of Dwayne's. Presumably this would need the blessing/co-operation of Kodak, if only to facilitate the issues relating to the fact that Kodachrome is normally sold in the UK (and presumably the rest of Europe) with processing included in the film's cost.

I think that the US is the only place where K64 is sold non pre-paid, due to the anti-trust lawsuit that Kodak had way back when.

I personally find it more unusual not to have process paid slides. Thats what I grew up with (Agfacolor....Anybody remember that)

Hello,

Kodachrome has been sold without processing included in Canada for a few years now. Previously it was sold with processing included. I don't know when it changed.

What do you consider a long turnaround time? I'm in Finland and I consistently get my films back in 9-14 days, usually exactly 10. (If I mail a film on Monday when I've been shooting over the weekend, I get it back next week's Thursday.)

Quality has always been excellent for me; the occasional water spot is the only thing I could complain about.

I very much doubt that could happen. Kodak are not interested in another K-14 lab. K-14 needs good volume to maintain consistent quality; that's part of the reason Kodak closed down lab after lab and now direct everything to Dwayne's.

I would continue to use Dwayne's as I've been very happy with their service, but if this German lab could process 120 film, that would be very exciting, as StorminMatt has noted.

For the first time in my life I just bought two Kodachrome 64 films.
I want to test this film while on holiday next summer.
If I like the pictures, maybe I’ll try to ‘Ilfochrome’ some of them myself.
Ilfochrome paper and chemicals can be ordered in Berlin (Fotoimpex)

So for the time being I really hope the film isn’t discontinued.

If someone is trying to setup a Kodachrome processing facility in Germany I wish him all the luck.

Maybe all 120 affiliados should drop a question about development at Dwayne's. Maybe this company is willing to give it a try.
