Justine Varga was the winner of this year's Olive Cotton award for photographic portraiture, for her photo 'Maternal Line', and it caused a lot of negative reactions from photographers because she directly works on film without using a camera. Her recent work is also abstract which didn't help either.

However, if you are looking at her work from a painter's view it isn't all that uncommon, only the technique is different. Moreover, there are many photographers and artists who used film or photographic paper as a canvas before (photogram).

Note: This thread is marked [A] because Justine Varga works completely analog.

Those are beautiful. I don't understand the process (she straps the film to the side of a suitcase when traveling?) but I'm fascinated by the results. Thanks for sharing this.

She invents all sorts of processes to get semi-random patterns on the film. Andy Warhol already did this with his 'oxidation paintings' (piss paintings) or he dropped a canvas on the street to let people walk over it.
