As some of you know, I'm kinda stuck in the house recovering from heart surgery 2 weeks ago. Since it's raining today I had to forgo my 20 min walk. With all this time on my hands I decided to try something I've wanted to do for a long time. To AI a pre AI lens. I had an old Nikkor 50mm f1.4 SC lens lying around with no use for it, so it was the gueiny pig. Just tried it out on my FM and it works great!

So what all is involved in "AI-ing" an NAI Nikkor? I have that same 50mm f/1.4 SC lens, and a few others that may need "AI-ing" sometime.

Basicly all that is really entailed is to remove the mount & aperture ring, cut or file a notch in the ring & reassemble the whole shebang. Depending on the lens there may be a spring & ball bearing used for the detent on the aperture ring.
Kinda impressive how far those things can go as small as they are.
It's important to get the start point correct or else you'll get reading errrors.
I generally use needle file from the local hobby shop.

if you can't get the link, i'm not very good with this computer stuff, it's like john said, for that particular lens file down approx 1.5mm from the f8 position to about 3 stops past the f1.4 position, this is all thats needed on full manual cameras, the link gives proceedures for placing the ee servo post which tells a program camera that the lens is set to min aperture, the lens speed index pin is also used with auto cameras and is required for the FA, not sure exactly what it does but think it tells the camera what the max aperture of the lens is so it knows when to change the shutter speed.
