Just wanted to share a recipe for TMZ

Like a nut I have to try things others recommend against. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. This experiment did not work out well the first or second go around so I thought some of you might find it useful.

TMAX P3200 shot at 3200 developed in PMK (yes you read that right). These are not a great shots but part of the testing on my first successful rolls.

The real challenge is that the TMZ seems to exhaust PMK more quickly than just about anything else I have ever processed. Here are some samples and then the recipe.

Developer mixed with distilled water.

The second and third shots were PMK 1+2+100 but you absolutely need 500ml for each roll other wise the will be really really thin - as in useless.

80 degrees F for 11 mins agitation - continuous 1st 30s then 3 inversions every 30 seconds. Water presoak for 2mins.

The first shot was exactly the same EXCEPT PMK 2+2+100 (1+1+50) as I felt there was still some exhaustion issues.

Thoughts?

Personally I think the combination is quite beautiful for some subject matter and I intend to use it for some more considered work. I am also testing Pyrocat HD next week or the week after as I actually prefer it to PMK by a slight margin but happened to be out when doing these tests.

First, your work shown here is very sensitive. A great motivator to shoot with this film.

Second, T-grain films developed in pyro based developer can be very effective. One has to discover what works for them.

Thanks - one other thing - these are unsharpened scans of the film, even at this size you can see the edge effects with this combo. the second two shots print fine on grade 3 the first shot prints very well on grade 2. The second two shots did need a little contrast boost after scanning.

I will have to post some of my better work sooner or later. TMZ is fantastic stuff for the right subject matter in the right light. I find that a lot of scenes with very low light indoors also have really bad light - as in looks terrible coming from too many directions and/or really flat. If you shoot TMZ and the light is low (as in not very much) and flat it looks terrible - just really grainy with no sparkle and no real redeeming features - well at least it is not blurry from too low a shutter speed but yuckky.

Any way this is TMZ in a very similar lighting to the above but processed in TMAX RS.

Yes on both - although not together usually. I usually process it in XTOL.
