After two days in bed due to a cold, I'm back at work. On my lunch break I decide to stop by the only place in town that could possibly stock Polaroid T55 film, to buy one box.
I ask the clerk how much the T55 is. He takes one down from the top shelf and looks at it.
"You can have this one for free, it expired yesterday."
I'm like, "You're kidding. How much?".
"It's free", he says.
(I start to grin.) "Well, the other box there, is that also expired?"
"I don't see any other box of T55", he says.
"It's got the label on the other side", I say.
"It's expired too. You can have it as well."
As I now have two boxes of T55 for free, I decide to try some color film as well. So I buy a box of T79, that hasn't expired.
Just before I leave, I gather some courage.
"You wouldn't happen to have any more Polaroid film on that shelf that is expired? I can pay for it, at a discount."
The clerk reaches up and shuffles the boxes for a while.
"This one is for experimental purposes only, it expired dec '05. Here." He hands me another box of T79.
I walk out of the store with about 500 USD worth of film for free. (Ok, it's not worth that much when expired, but still).
But the story doesn't end there. As I get back to work, I get the urge to open the boxes, just to look inside. I open the T79 film with expiry date dec '05. The print on the foiled box reads "EXP. DATE 12/09".
I really should buy a lottery ticket today.
