I've been wanting a good macro lens, so I took a chance on a 105mm f/2.8D Micro from Nikon. It was rated UG from KEH, which has not worked out well for me in the past. But this one is pretty great. I've been shooting it around the house to familiarize myself, and I REALLY like it so far.

I lucked out. I don't know why it is rated UG. There is a good amount of dust, but that rarely matters. Maybe it scared off the last guy...

Any tips or experiences from others who use this lens?

I have used the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 micro lens for years. It is one of my three sharpest prime lenses (180mm f/2.8 and 55mm f/3.5 micro are the other two).

The lens is so sharp that I add a soft focus filter when shooting tight facial portraits with this lens.

I really like that the filter size is 52mm which is the same as many of my other Nikon lenses.

Love using this lens for wedding ring shots.

The lens captures images from infinity to a 1:2 reproduction ratio. When I need to shoot a 1:1 reproduction ratio, I mount a Nikon PN-11 extension tube between the lens and the body.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the 52mm filter thread! Filters are a constant juggling act.
