Just a bit of fun for Ilford fans

Hi everyone--
I was just looking through an old photo magazine from 1956 and came across a very cool ad that I thought you might like to see. The coolest thing from my point of view is that it was a half page ad in a major magazine--I thought the British Invasion didn't happen until 1964 or so...ha ha. Anyway, enjoy:

I have a stack of old photography magazines from the 60's through to the 80's and I've been trying to scan a lot of the full-page ads. Ilford is loudly represented in pretty much every issue.
These are from late 1970-early 1980.

Here's a thought...

How about having a dedicated subgallery to be used as an archive for old adverts, brochures and product packaging ? If the description field is filled in sensibly with dates, manufacturer, product etc it would be searcheable as well ?

I don't have any Ilford adverts but my Dad gave me these a little while ago, dating from 1959ish:

I like the idea - I love old ads and stuff. they have their very own aesthetics.

I just skipped through my German 1950s photo brochures/booklets. they could make you believe there was only AGFA .

I have a few boxes of my Dad's old photography magazines from the late '40 s through early '50s, I'll have to scan a few things from there. I love to curl up in bed with them and read. Since today's magazines have all gone digital and I'm new to photography anyway, it's all good info. Besides I mainly use old manual focus cameras anyway, so I feel right in sync.

After reading the earlier post I picked up one of my Dad's old photography magazines today.

To put things into perspective here's a quote from a letter to the editor in the Spring 1948 issue of "Photo Arts".

"....I came across an article in your swell magazine on the future of color. The story began with this provocative question: "Is Black-and-White Photography doomed?" The accompanying photographs make the question a foregone conclusion. Obviously, black-and-white photography is not only doomed according to your pictorial evidence, but it seems incredible that it has survived this long...."

And yet, 60 years later, we can still buy black and white film. It's not as easy as it used to be but it's still here.

Ok, thy this on for size!

This is probably the last Kodachrome ad Kodak ever ran. It was in "Darkroom Techniques" from the early 90s.

Kodachrome and Ektachrome shared the bill.

There's a great site at http://www.photomemorabilia.co.uk/ for anyone interested in the history of Ilford Ltd. Some good memorabilia pics there also, a few of which I have contributed.

Maurice Fisher is the site owner; I'm sure he would welcome any examples of old Ilford advertising for inclusion on the site.

The only thing more loudly represented than Ilford was Kodak in my magazines - they're on the back cover of pretty much every issue I have. Kodachrome 25 especially is touted very prominently In those days. Mid 1970's.

Related to the 100th anniversary in 1994 of Lieven Gevaert starting manufacturing photographic products the Fotomuseum Antwerpen in collaboration with Agfa-Mortsel made an exposition devoted to 70 years advertising of Gevaert (untill the merger) .

Each Kodak Tri-Chem Pack makes 8 ounces of developer, 8 ounces of stop bath, 8 ounces of Fixer...enough to process two rolls of 620 film, or fifty 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 prints, or their equivalents.

What a wonderful idea that is!

Simon - are you watching...? Some sort of mini-kit like that might be just the ticket to go alongside your Defend the Darkroom campaign; a cheap (almost disposable, so if you don't get on you don't feel you've wasted too much) starter kit would certainly make it easier to convince people to just 'have a go'. (The magic of seeing their first developed roll will do the rest .)

I was thinking the same thing as I was scanning the old ad. I bet one could market it to all the people out there buying holgas and then trying to figure out where to get 120 film developed.

This would also rock for traveling! Would there be a problem putting something like this in checked luggage?
