I just got a Jupiter 9 from the former USSR. Like many things from the old country it came with a surprise on the front threads.

I think it's some kind of polarizing filter. It turns 'round and round. Can someone identify it for me?

Also, it took me a bit to figure out how to aperture this lens. Interesting design.

If it's a polarizer, you should be able to see a difference in reflections off of shiny surfaces as you rotate it.
Or else, if you have another polarizer, look through both and rotate one.

Thanks!

It's a linear polarizer that rotates.

Blue sky time.

It appears to be marked as a polariser, I can't see the markings very well. Made at Valdai.
What do you mean about "how to aperture"? It's either a preset aperture or regular aperture, depending on the mount. I think some later m42 lenses had auto aperture.
J9s can be very nice:smile:

Made at Zagorsk, not Valdai.
For the rest it is hard to think of anything else than a plain polarizer.

I never used a lens before that I needed to stop it down by twisting the barrel. Set it to the f/16 mark and leave it and micro adjust the aperture. I got this to test the 85mm range and maybe move to something modern if I like it. Lens is tiny. So far it's not bad. Useless wide open though.

It's a preset aperture. You want to use f:8, you set the ring with detents to 8, open the aperture to focus, then close it to the value selected to make the exposure. It's so you can focus wide open, then stop down rapidly without moving the camera from your eye.
Mine is in Kiev/Contax mount, typical old Sonnar wonkiness wide open, stopped down to f:4 and below quite sharp.

No clicks makes it good for video work. It also has a round aperture at all values which is nice. Takes some getting used to.
