hello all,
i am looking into some jobo tanks for my processing. what is the difference in the Six-Reel Film Tank with Magnet and the Six-Reel Film Tank with with the cog? i do not have any base at this time. i may buy a processor (to do C41 and E6) when i can afford one. thanks for the help.

The cog can't be removed from the lid.

OTOH with the magnet you can add a cog. If you do you won't be able to remove the cog you add.

OTOH lids can always be replaced.

Basically cog is needed for the lift. The tanks with a red rubber top are better for inversion or if you aren't using a Jobo processor.

I've removed cogs from jobo tanks, their press fitted inplace and are "O" ring sealed. Jobo has (?had?) a roller system for turning the tanks by hand on a counter top, check Ebay. If you work by hand you would not want the cogs and would rather have the red cover that covers the mouth of the tank.
Lately, Ebay seems to have more than their normal Jobo, CPA's and CPP's for auction.

Regards.

Hi Eddie !
Jobo parts are standardized as much as possible.
Tanks are the same, for paper and film. (here, 2500 series for film and 2800 series for paper) the differences are a funnel and a center core for film tanks to keep the dark inside the tank and keep the rolls centered and a beaker for paper tanks to hold the processing chemistry. Funnel; beaker and centre core are the same part numbers for all series of tanks.
Depending on style of processor you use you need : nothing for hand processing by inversion, a magnet at the base of the tank to attach the tank to "plain" processors, and a dented cog at the lid for processors with a lift. The gear at the lid is used to rotate the tank.
The lids are the same with or without the cog. You may have luck removing a cog or a magnet at the base, but you may broke the lid or tank ... Been there, done that......
A cog equipped lid can't be easily used by hand because the orange plastic cover won't fit. So the tank is not watertight. You may use a large rubber stopper if you find one.
So if you buy you tank new, you may order a :
25X1 if you need a plain lid for a processor without lift or hand processing,
25X3 if you need a cog fitted lid for a processor with a lift.
As for the magnet presence, because at some time it was optional for 25x1 tanks. (it has part number 1504 if my memory is good and is the same for 15XX and 25XX or 28XX tanks.)
Last but not least, they make a set of rollers on an adjustable base to rotate the tanks un horizontal position. Moderately priced and part number 1509. (I bought one last month so it may still be made)
Hope this helps....

Hello Eddie,

As others have already stated, tanks with cog lids are intended for use on Jobo processors with lift. If you're going to go the Jobo route using one of their semi-automated processors, I'd highly recommend getting the lift option and using tanks with the cog. This setup makes the filling and dumping of the tanks SO much more convenient, reliable and accurate...IMO.

BTW, cogs can be fitted to the smaller 1500 film tank series though this series is normally sold with magent or red lid for inversion style processing. The 2500 series film tanks, I believe, are sold only as cog style tanks. One other thought regarding the film tanks: I read a note many years ago that the 2500 series film tanks will provide more even development than the 1500 tanks; especially for 120 roll film. I have both and have never been disappointed with either setup...just thought I'd mention it, though. The 2500 tanks do use more chemistry so, depending on what film (color or B&W) you plan to develop, this might be a consideration for you.

Hope this helps.

No both ways. If the model number ends with a 1 then it's magnet. If it ends with a #3 then it's a cog tank.

Print tanks have ridges inside to hold the prints in place. If you're doing paper or sheet film in the tank you want those ridges.

I have a 2523 tank with cog lid and the 4x5 reel that I use for inversion processing by sticking a cork stopper in the hole. It works but I would rather have a real inversion lid for the tank if there is one that will fit it. Will one of the 1500 series inversion lids fit on the 2523 tank?

No. You need a new 2500 type lid. Or one from a 2800 type print tank. If you buy the print tank you'll need to unscrew the cup in the lid and put the funnel that is in your current lid.

You can watch ebay for a tank with the right lid. Likely cheaper then a new lid from Jobo.

Hello Eddie,

I used to use a handmade film drum on an old Uni-roller and it seemed to work pretty well. Temperature drift, the fact that I could only process one sheet of film at a time and a bonus at work all led me to my CPP-2 processor. Years ago, I also processed sheet film in BTZS tubes which is a totally manual agitation technique; and they worked fine. Therefore, other than maintaining consistent solution temperatures I can't imagine the Uni-roller wouldn't work.

Congrats on your Alt2 purchase! IMO once you've experienced sheet film processing in Jobo expert drums, there ain't no goin' back to nuttin' else!

Have fun!
