Hello I recently acquired 3 Jobo tanks because I think the reels are much better than the paterson ones, loading is such a breeze now. Today the Big tank arrived (see in spoiler) and the cap has a seal. Is the sealing missing on the other 2 Tanks or did they came out of the factory without a seal?

Very good point !

-all Series 1000 tanks I got (identical to yours in cap serration) got no extra seal

-) all Series 2000 tanks I got (though with different cap serration than yours and the 1st Series 2000 tanks) got no extra seal

All these tanks without extra seal got screw-in funnel inserts with two ridges as grips. The sealing takes place by the funnel insert having got a slightly conical circular ridge going into the tank circumference.

However I got two tanks of different diameter of the period preceeding the Series 1000/2000:
-) the Series 1000 equivalent has got a funnel insert glued into the cap, that got a sealing ridge as above

-) the Series 2000 equivilant has got a funnel insert glued into the cap that got a circular recess into which a PE-seal ring is inserted, exactly as with yours.

Seemingly this early design was taken over into early versions of the Series 1000 (2000?)
Looking further at reel deails of the pre Series 1000/2000 tanks even more differences in design among themselves show up. Thus quite a mess concernung sorting things out...

Thus nothing is lacking at your tanks, you just got two different versions within same series. I guess the tanks proper are all the same, so that you may exchange the caps.

Thanks, I was just wondering because it seemed strange. The screw funnel fits on the two smaller versions as well so if one is leaking I guess I will use the cap with the seal.

I bought all 3 tanks separately and got pretty good deals on it. The big one also came with 5 reels, super stoked about it!!! The 2x135 1x120 tank actually came with the original manual. I was looking at it to get any clues about the seal but its hard to decode these old pictures.

I scanned the manual if anyone is interested. (Server allows only for 1mb for uploads I think, hence the lower quality)

These are the earlier tanks used with a JOBO processor. I have one and mine has no seal, nor does it leak. It is easier to empty than the later ones and comes ready with a hole in the plastic cap so when developing C41 the 'gassing' it makes when pouring bleach into a tank with residual developer does not make it leak when pressure builds up. Or in the case of the later ones, make the 'push on' caps, pop off.

It ... comes ready with a hole in the plastic cap so when developing C41 the 'gassing' it makes ... does not make it leak when pressure builds up.

These Jobo Series 1000/2000 tanks were introduced years before their rotary processors. But already the predecessor series were intended for inversion, and thus had to be tight.

None of my Series 1000/2000 tanks has a cap lid with a hole.
This of course would have made them useless for inversion processing.

The first drums, solely intended for rotary processing, seemingly had no hole in the lid for gas exchange.
Then the drum lids got a central hole.
But in the manual of the 3rd version, with upgraded cap with floating dipstick, the photo still shows caps without hole whereas this version actually got that hole too...

As indicated, the number of series with subversions makes it all confusing.

Speaking of confusing features at Jobo tanks/drums:

All the white lids in original Series 1000/2000 style, whether they got a hole or none, got a red dot at the top.
The same lids in red, whether they got a hole or not, got no dot marking.

In photos at the manuals no dot is to be seen on the white lids.

Since long time I was wondering what these red dots referred to. Any ideas?

All very confusing! The definitive leaflets are lost within the mists of time. Think that they were a better design than the later clip on lid type, whilst they work well, the screw top ones are better - In my opinion that is.

But the screw-on caps can produce a squeak I cannot put into words....

I wrote jobo an email about the white dot and red lid but never received an answer. Email was sent on April 4th so we'll never know, I tried...
