Yesterday my RA4 chemicals and Fuji paper arrived, so last night I sat down and gathered all the stuff together that I need for my first colour printing session this weekend. I've got a couple of Jobo 2840 tanks with cog lids for my CPP2, but I've just realised none of the lids have cups. They all have funnels for the film cores. I'll try and get a cup, or lid+cup off eBay, but in the meantime I'm wondering if it's possible to use the cog lids without the cup? Either by blocking up the central hole of the funnel with a bung + tape or removing the funnel completely and closing off the hole.

Has anyone else tried this? And if so, do the chemicals still run into the tank okay?

Also, what exactly does the cup do, other than create a light trap? It's hard to tell from looking at pictures where the chemical flows out etc.

If you are using the CPP to process, then the funnel is fine. I assume you only have the cores for film processing. They made a small plastic plug for the funnel to keep light out with the core removed while processing prints. Small black rubber stoppers are available at many hardware stores that would work perfectly for this.

Thanks Greg. Does that mean the 'cups' are not really required when on the processor? Are they for manual processing? I'm a bit confused about why they exist if it's fine without!

Dear FujiLove,

If you are referring to the bright red caps that snap over the top, they are for manual processing or possibly processing without a lift (I have no lift but don't use them). If you use the recommended volume of fluid, it will not pour out during processing.

Good luck,

Hi Neal - No, I'm referring to the black cups that sit inside the print drum lids. They replace the funnels which attach to the film cores and create a lightproof seal.

The cups serve two purposes:
  1. Light traps.
  2. A holding reservoir for the chemicals whilst the tank is vertical.

You might be able to pick up a couple of spare lids from Ebay, failing that, you'd probably need to go to Jobo or CATLabs for spares.
