Jobo drums. Did I get this right

Hi all
Getting closer on finishing my darkroom I just recieved my "new" CPE2+ (lift) processor yesterday.
In the package was a 1520 drum and a 2840 drum.
After a search and some reading I get the impression (stated by severel posters here and on LLF) that the bottom part and lid of my 2840 equals the2521/23 drum. Is this correct?
I want to do 4X5" sheets so I guess that means I have the drum and the center post (from the 1520) needing only the 2509n sheetfilm reel and the guide 2511 (for 4X5") and/or 2512 (for 9X12cm), right?
It seems that I can use the 2840 for my 13X18cm sheets too but I have heard about uneven development issues. Does these issues aply to development not using the CPE or are they common with the CPE too?

Soren, I'm sorry I can't be positive but I just aquired a jobo 2300 and I did a lot of study.
I was pretty sure the 2xxx drums for for the ATL-2x00 machines? There is a 3xxx series that is the expert Drums for Large formats.

The 15xx are for the CPE2's. You'll have to double check this but I'm pretty sure...

Both are usable on your machine, you just have to adjust the rollers for the different drum diameters so the drums line up with the funnel.

The 1520 is for the small roll film reels and will take one reel for 120/220 or 2 reels for 35mm.

The 2840 is a combination of the 2820 short drum and 2870 extension module. They are the same size as the 25xx tanks and have ridges to separate, hold prints. This will hold 2 8x10" (20x25 cm) or 1 11x14" (28x35 cm) for prints. It will also hold 3 2509n reels for 4 x 5 films. It is suggested that you load the 2 outer rows on the 4 x 5 (4 sheets per reel) and limit the chems to 1000 ml. More will put too much strain on the rotation motor. You can try larger sheet films using the print ridges to hold in place. Never having tried it, I cannot offer clues to success, and you may find the anti-halation backing not completely washed out - wash the films thoroughly in trays after should cure that.

Can you tell us how you find loading two rolls of 35mm on one jobo reel. Do you just follow one after the other??? Any tips?

Never loaded more than one 35mm roll an a reel. The small tank mentioned will hold 2 reels. These reels are adjustable for film size and will hold one reel when set for 120 and two reels when set for 35mm. Hope this will clarify. The reel comes with a small red clip that is designed specifically to separate two 120 rolls. Some here have tried taping two rolls together end to end and will probably work for 35mm if you have 12 exposure rolls. 24 are too long to fit.

The large Jobo reels will still only hold one roll of 35mm (or two of 120, one after the other - you roll the first one in all the way to the end, set the little red peg in the side of the reel to prevent the second roll overlapping it, and then roll the second one on up to the peg.) They look much larger than the normal small-tank reels, but the spiral is more widely spaced (and the diameter of the 'dead space' in the middle much larger, so the fill-level of the tank remains reasonable) so the amount of film they'll take is the same.

I should add that this is presuming there isn't some extra-special reel I'm not aware of, which is entirely possible of course! But certainly all the large-tank 35mm reels I've used in my CPE & ATL fit this description.

The OP needs the funnel for the lid. I don't remember if the funnel from the bottom of the 1520 tank will fit the 2500/2800 type lid. Gently give it a twist. Then remove the cup on the bottom of the 2840 lid. Hopefully the funnel will fit. Without the funnel I'm not sure it'll be light tight. Worse getting chemicals in will be a pain.

It will I had some time to play around with the drums this afternoon and I must say they are pretty clever designed.
So the intire 2840 drum is basicly a 25xx drum, right? I could just buy the reels and center post and use the one drum for all formats from 24X36mm to 8X10"+?

Basically. The 2840 should have ridges on the inside. The 25xx won't have the paper ridges. Other then the ridges the basic tank is the same. Funnel for film tanks. Cups for paper tanks. That's it really.

No should fit. I can't remember if I've ever done it . I've got lots of film tanks.

The ridges are fairly small.

The film reels will fit in the paper drums. In fact my film drums are identical to the paper drums, except for the label. You will need a new lid (at least insert) and center column for film, or a cup insert for paper.

I have loaded two reels of 35mm in the 1520 tank. There's the easy way involving placing the film into the start of the reel in daylight then switching off the light and continuing until the end and loading the reel into the tank and making it light tight. Putting the light back on and then doing the same with the other reel. Then still in the dark open the tank top and put the second reel in and close the tank.

The other way is to load both films on both reels in the dark and place both in the central tube and into the tank, closing the lid and then put on the light. Sounds simpler and quicker and if you are particularly adept at loading the start of the second 35mm film into the second reel in the dark then fine.

Personally I much prefer placing the film into the jaws of the reel in daylight. I find it quicker and surer in the end doing it this way and if you're the same then method 1 has a lot going for it.

It all depends on your feel for working in the dark and finding all the bits and sensing what is actually happening as if it was daylight.

Not my forte but it may be yours

The older 28xx drums did not have paper ridges, Later in the production life, JOBO saved money by making them all the same, with paper ridges, just using different labels and different funnels under the lids. The lid funnels twist off and are interchangeable.

Hmm I'm a bit confused as to how the 9X12cm and 4X5" film guides for the sheetfilm reel works. Do they sit on the reels during development or....? Hmm seems they are only used together with the loader, right?

First you adjust the 2509N reel to the right size. Then you put the film in. Then you insert the inserts.

You don't have to use the loader. It sure doesn't hurt but I'm sure some people manage without.
