How good is the old Jobo 2336 tank with the old elliptical 2021 reels for developing 4x5 sheet film?

Also can you use it wth inversion rather than rotary agitation? If rotary is necessary is rotation on a unicolor base OK? I have a more sophisticated Jobo processor but it will be at least a couple of months before I am able to set it up.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

I don't know about the reels, I use the 2509 reels, but I have had good luck agitating it manually in a bath of water. I just float it in water and keep it turning constantly, changing directions regularly. Kind of like BTZS tubes. I tried with a unicolor, but I got lots of streaking. Since the agitation in the water bath is really random, the unevenness problems have totally gone away.

This is the outfit I use for 4X5. The unicolor base works great. The base I have switches direction. I've not had any trouble with streaks using a dilute HC110 mixture.

Just clarifying that this is the 2336 tank (not the more current 2523 with the 2509N reels), and takes the old style ellyptical 2021 reels. The tank actually seems designed for inversion agitation which I would prefer. Unfortunately I can't find any info on this old tank (?1970s vintage) on Jobo's website and customer support has taken a nosedive after the closure of Durst USA and the takeover of the US service by Omega Satter.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany

I have a 2336 tank and two of the 4"x5" film holders (for 6 sheets each) model 2021. I used it for inversion agitation successfully. The instructions that came with it refer to the volume of liquid needed as 1100mL for one 4x5 film holder, and 2000mL for two of them. I have the instructions that refer to model 2300 but the illustration clearly shows it to be like my 2336. It has a wider red lid than the current models. I could copy the instructions for you if you like, but there's nothing that you don't already know, except that it's worth mentioning that the clip that prevents the reels from sliding on the core tube needs to be used.

One thing that I didn't know: The name Jobo comes from Johannes Bockemühl.

I goofed

I was on the way out the door when I posted the above, I really have a 4323 tank with the 2021 reels.

Sorry, I got the tank number wrong.

I use the 4323 tank and 2021 reels with the unicolor roller, but it would work for inversion too.

I have the instructions, in English, German and French. To minimize scanning, is English sufficient?

I have scanned what I have. Curiously, my 2000 series tank for two Plansets (sheet film sets) has its catalogue number on its base, 2336, but that number does not appear in the scanned instructions.

Also, in the instructions that I have, there is not a single reel tank for one 4x5 reel, although there is for the slightly smaller 9x12 reel. However in a post from 2013 CatLabs said:

"2336 is a tank for 2X 2021.
2236 is the tank for 1X 2021"

For inversion, with 2 reels for 4x5, the liquid volume required is 2000mL. With the current 2500 series, it is 3000mL or thereabouts, so the earlier setup has an advantage (if you consider 2000mL to be enough, of course)

Now I have a "file too large" notification from photrio.

I will attempt to split it into two files.

About the clip: when there is one sheetfilm reel, there isn't a groove for the clip that keeps it in place. That seems to be a design shortcoming. The clip will not hold if it's placed where there are not grooves. All I can suggest is that you place a piece of plastic pipe (of length about 28mm, diameter around 30mm) above the reel and then the clip will prevent the reel moving along the core during inversion.

I haven't used the loader. With a little practice I loaded successfully and quickly.

My 2336 has a red cap. It has developed a smell like old Tupperware, which I assume is some sort of soft plastic breakdown. It still works ok.

The 2021 reels that I have are fixed for only 4x5. The 2509n later reel for the 3000 series is adjustable to three different widths (4x5, i suppose 9x12 and 6x9) but it won't fit in the 2336 tank.

My 2021 are for 4inx5in only. The slots are a snug fit at a shade over 4in.

The two halves are glued into position, unlike the 2509n which are adjustable.
