Jekyll Island, Georgia

We went to Jekyll Island about three weeks ago, I'm just now posting a picture from it due to too many irons flying around.
It's one of the closest places I know to Atlanta that has driftwood beaches. My brother had visited a few weeks earlier and showed me what he found. It turned out thte place is commercialized much more than I like, but on the north end of the island you can get access to the driftwood beaches and wander to your hearts content. If you pick your vantage point well you can get shots with unimpeded ocean to the horizon. I found going there on the off season is the best time for much lower rates at the hotel, far fewer people wandering around, and the light is at a lower angle all day and helps bring out detail in the sand better.
Only hassle was the wind, it seemed to have a thing going on with my darkcloth and it wanted to run away at every chance.

I visited there on my trip before Thanksgiving. On the eastern (I think) side there are several sites that have dunes as well. Additionally there are roads that lead off the main paved road that gets one back into the oaks. I agree it is commercialized but still a neat place to visit. I understand from Jim Shanesy that Bruce B like Jekyl better then Pt.Lobos. Different strokes for different folks.

Can't really speak about Jekell Island, but I did get a chance on a business trip last March to visit Fort Pulaski, near Savannah. Only thing was I did not have a camera, the place is full of images inside and out. Here's a link to it.. http://www.nps.gov/fopu/

Altamaha Swamp (go west out of Brunswick to Route 13...then go north)(!)

Been there bunches. Be sure and stop by the Crab Shack nearby, great food!
Theres also much older Fort Jackson, closer in to Savannah on the river.

Part of the chain of nine forts built along the Savannah River, Old Fort Jackson was constructed in 1808 and occupied during the War of 1812 and again by the Confederates during the Civil War. What Jim said about Savanah was true as well...a person could spend a month there shooting architecture...well worth the visit.

Slightly South of Jekyll & Cumberland Isls is North Florida beginning with Fort Clinch (occupied by Union army during Civil War) along St Marys river - dividing line between FL & GA. Talbot Island has dynamic coastline with plenty of driftwood as an old oak forest is being eroded by the ocean. Timucuan preserve with thousands of acres of salt-water marsh. Guana River State Park & management area, 12,000 acres of barrier island that includes dunes, fresh & salt-water marsh and extensive live-oak forest. Nice thing about the area is that until you get down to St Augustine tourist crowds & commercialization are not problems.

Btw, State of Florida recently clarified their photography permit - only charged at State Parks if photographer requires disruption of park service, eg early closing for filming purposes.
