Anyone use JD Photochem, out of Canada? They are selling phenidone on ebay for $12/100g, which is a little cheaper than some of the other suppliers, but when I asked for the shipping price, here's the email I received:

So, if any of you are tempted to hit that "buy it now" button, reasoning that 100g of phenidone can't cost much to ship, think again.

Jay

It would be the same or worse going the other direction. Last time I tried to buy a box of paper from Freestyle it was going to be 28.00 shipping

I've dealt with JD Photochem on several occasions and have not found their prices - or shipping to be unreasonable.

Claire is a nice person to deal with. I've been happy with all our transactions.

Why not buy it direct instead of off Ebay?

Then you can add anything else you want to the order. That shipping does seem high. You can get a gallon colour kit shipped for less.

Jay,

Did you email them and ask? I don't know the answer, but I wonder if there are some charges related to hazardous materials regulations by Canada Post? An email to them asking for info may resolve this positively?

Tom,

a box of paper is one thing, but 100g of phenidone is, well,.. 100g. I just bought a bundle of wood from a canadian seller that was appx. 12"x16"x2", and weighed about 2lbs, and the shipping was only around $10. When I sent you 100ml of liquid developer, it only cost a few dollars. There is no way the $18 shipping charge is a reasonable reflection of the actual shipping costs.

Jay
Ah, but don't forget the duty on softwood lumber.
Jokes aside while 18.00 seems steep I don't see much come in here from over the border less than about 12.00

Jay, I get most of my Evil Scientist chemistry from Artcraft Chemicals in NY. If I calculated correctly, that amount of Phenidone should run you $24.00.

www.artcraftchemicals.com

(URL fixed in quote.)

FWIW, I've got Art Craft listed as the lowest-cost supplier of phenidone in my price spreadsheet. OTOH, that's based on a 50g order. For 100g, it looks like Digital Truth would be a couple dollars cheaper ($16.00 vs. $18.00), assuming equal shipping costs. (My experience is that both places offer reasonable shipping costs, but I usually buy several things at once so I'm not sure about a single-item order.) FWIW, Digital Truth is also one of only two places I know that sells Dimezone S, which is a phenidone variant that supposedly has a longer life in solution. The other such place is Dead Link Removed which I suspect is related to Digital Truth -- they're both located in the same town and have remarkably similar product lists, although their prices differ slightly.

I have bought several things from Johnny D and it was always a good experience. If the pricing makes sense - do it. I have not had any problems and have saved some money on Silver nitrate, phenidone and hydroquinone.

I never buy just 100 grams from them. I tend to buy the bigger packages which usually only cost a little more. I also tend to order a few things. I wonder if you're just seeing a min shipping cost? IIRC Johnny used to drive the stuff across the border to a USPS post office.

Hi Jay, did not notice your reference to "Buy It Now" before: looks like it was an eBay transaction - I've hit that eBay "Buy It Now Button" a few times without reading the fine print - to my regret!

I've always dealt with Claire directly (via email). All of my JD transactions have been for the purchase of photochemistry. I have no complaints about the shipping charges I incurred. In each instance, Claire has informed my of the shipping costs (to So. California) and asked for my approval (or non-approval).

I have bought supplies from JDPhotochem to be shipped to Melbourne, Australia and used the surface shipping option. Even
then the price of shipping was almost the same as the cost of chemicals (4lb chemical) and total cost ~US$170 BUT she uses Canada Parcel Post and I found that her shipping matches what CPP's online calculator tells me.
