A friend of mine gave me this lens a few years ago and I completely forgot about it until a week ago, when I found it while searching for something completely different

Not a lot can be found online about this one, I see it has colour filter inside so the question is will that affect the image quality? But I suppose IQ of it won't slow me, I am interested in the effect of the filters on bw photography, more important question is - what purpose serves this platic that goes over the lens?

That one I already knew, the thing I don't know is the basic function of that plastic thing over the lens

I think you better show the lens with its plastic thing, otherwise Watson will deduct you are talking about the plastic lens container

So, here is an updated photo of the lens with the same question.

I have never heard of a lens that has a colour filter inside, but I want to believe you.

Perhaps the plastic thing is placed in the middle under the lens, to deal with the coloured ray of light . . .

Looks like the lens sits in a metal house that will attach to the enlarger, right?

If none of the above is correct, my guess: it is a device you hold under the sun and kill ants with it

Boris, had you mounted it onto an enlarger you might have found out... might...

Well, that weird thingy is for illuminating the two scales. But I consider it wellthought, badworking.
Doing it without it but with a small torch works much better.

By the way, there are different designs of that lens, including different designs of these thingies.

In terms of B&W, you can use the filters for contrast control if you are printing on multigrade paper

It is a polish enlarger lens. Although it has been very innovative idea, I'd say unique, it is not really decent lens as far as quality is concerned. The lens allowed to make color prints using standard condenser enlarger and it was much easier than fiddling with filters in the drawer. Nice collectible worth having, but not necessarily for making prints )
