It has been just over a year since we lost the incredibly talented and visionary portrait photographer Jane Bown. I was fortunate to be given her book "Faces" for christmas and I have enjoyed reading about the creative process behind some of her beautiful portraits. I was literally speechless when I beheld the last picture in the book. She had captured the very essence of Stephen Hawking and succeeded in making him look truely handsome. I think her talent was in making people at ease and capturing their true personality. I will be dipping into the book frequently for inspiration and in particular I hope to learn from it, especially how to handle natural light and use its directional quality to my advantage. Who needs a studio ? Jane clearly didnt and was truely liberated by the simplicity in her accomplished working technique and the cameras she chose to work with. Thankyou Jane for this marvellous legacy and for being truely inspirational.
