It has been just over a year since we lost the incredibly talented and visionary portrait photographer Jane Bown. I was fortunate to be given her book "Faces" for christmas and I have enjoyed reading about the creative process behind some of her beautiful portraits. I was literally speechless when I beheld the last picture in the book. She had captured the very essence of Stephen Hawking and succeeded in making him look truely handsome. I think her talent was in making people at ease and capturing their true personality. I will be dipping into the book frequently for inspiration and in particular I hope to learn from it, especially how to handle natural light and use its directional quality to my advantage. Who needs a studio ? Jane clearly didnt and was truely liberated by the simplicity in her accomplished working technique and the cameras she chose to work with. Thankyou Jane for this marvellous legacy and for being truely inspirational.

The portraits I'm looking at on smugmug

make me wonder if she's the one who started the 'lets chop off the top of the head' style. She does make a nice portrait.

Ricardo, Thank You!! What a difference. The shot of Beckett caught my attention, having seen Bresson's portrait of him in a book. The light in that one seems most impressive of the series.
I appreciate the correction.

You're welcome.
Her portraits of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Sir John Betjeman, Dame Vivienne Westwood and Bjork are among the best taken of these subjects.
The picture of the American tourists in London is just a delight as it is true to this day.

It is worthwhile reading through the obituaries/tribute pieces in the Guardian that were written about her when she died.

I saw the recent documentary about her - "Looking For Light - Jane Bown" in 2014 at the Vancouver International Film Festival. It was very interesting and quite well made. It appealed to me more than it did to my wife, no doubt because there is a lot of interest to photographers. Not least because she herself is in her own biography.

I came fairly late to appreciate her. I wish I had known more about her earlier.

Ironically, one of the reasons I learned about her was that she and I share a liking for a favorite lens - the Olympus Zuiko 85mm f/2 - as well as a favorite camera system - the Olympus OMs.

It is strange how we stumble upon these bits of knowledge.
