I've discovered the real reason film is dying ....

I can't cut negatives in the same room as my cats...as soon as they hear the snip of the scissors, they go nuts and try to "help" me. Then it ends up being a lot more work fur nothing... ;-)

If by "mogged" you mean mugged and fogged, then I would agree!

It's also being pulled processed!
 
If I were you I would find a different film cassette opener.
 
If it chews the film the wrong way, is that going against the grain?
