its that time of year

well its the end of 2020. some of you have been marooned some have gone out a little, some have gone out a lot more. but we all have changed how we get. on.
its been a hard year I am sure, but 2021 is sure to. be a little different, a little better a little more hopeful ..

that all said, what is your plan photographically for 2021?
are you going to photograph where you live .. every nook and cranny of your dwelling or neighborhood or apartment complex? are you going to photograph the people you have been sheltering in place with a little more? going to start making still lives of your dinner ingredients before you convert them to dinner and make glamour shots of your meal. before you eat it ? maybe buy a strip of UV light or the sun and start making cyanotypes or sun prints or lumen prints. or invent a process or do something you never thought you would do in 1,000,000 years?
lot of time to dwell, lot of time to think lot of time to play or carry on...

what are your plans for 2021? something fun?

I hope you all have a great new year and turn whatever lemons you have into lemonade .

(ps. this has nothing to do with media digital film lumen paper chlorophyl I don't really care and hopefully others don't either)

Except for the beginning of the year when we went to Hawaii we will not look back at 2020 with fond memories. Next year even without getting vaccinated until after the start of the year will have to be better. Even a little better will seem much better. We have been fortunate, no one we are related to or know have gotten the virus and since we are on a fixed income our worst problem: canceling three trips is nothing compared what to most of the rest of the people have suffered or lost. There are jobs lost that will never come back. There are people who have been financially damaged who will never make up the loses. There people who lost there homes. And there are people who lost friends and family.

Hopefully this new covid strain won't get out of control... As far as photography goes, I won't be able to go to Japan to continue my series, until about March, 2022. Hopefully I'll be able to go out to the Canadian Prairies this summer, though, and continue with a couple of projects...

I grew up in Saskatchewan, but live on the west coast. It's a bit of a drive, but through some lovely scenery. On the prairies, there's lots to see. Ghost towns. Band lands. Sand dunes. Old rural churches, especially Ukrainian orthodox... Big open sky. I find it all very inspiring. You live in Montreal! That's a great place for photography. Went there a few years ago, and shot a ton of film!

Do my best to return to what was. I haven't been taking many photos because my vision is fading. I need an operation but funding is short. But I'm just going to start taking photos anyways and see what happens.

I've been figuring out how to teach photo classes online, and coming up with course materials to make it work. It played well this fall, so I'm repeating the concept and adding a new class. I'm working on still life photography at home mostly, although later this week when it warms up a bit I'm going to go out and to some night photography with my 5x12.

My plan is one camera, one lens, one year, I'm not a young photographer (I'm 61) like Mike Johnston really aimed the program, but I'm going to give it a go. My tools are Nikon F2, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, and HP5+. I'm not going to be dogmatic about it, if I need a macro lens, I'll use it, but I will not go looking for reasons to remove the 50. I've got too many camera systems. They're getting put away.

I'll see how it goes...

Like many here, we have been blessed - It seems almost everyone we know has had the virus, but they are all fine - even many elderly aunts and uncles I was quite worried about.

I have been out probably more than ever this year, and have found a lot of new gems in the north Georgia mountains. Now, I have too many ideas, and will be trying to figure out how to make time. I still have several unfinished ideas from years past...

Between family and work, I am afflicted with the same constraints as most.

Don't feel bad. You are not alone. Many Canadians spend way too much time travelling outside the country rather than inside. Still many places I need to see. The Yukon is on my bucket list. Maybe August, 2021! I would just have to drive straight up!

Definitely hoping / looking forward to a more productive 2021. Checking through my log book for 2020, I count a total of 63 rolls of film (35mm E100G/VS, Tmax100, and Tri-X/HP-5 Plus, and 120 E100G and Pan F Plus) exposed from 01.01.20 to date. I photographed mostly in town this year, working on my long-term Vancouver project. For the most part COVID protocols, insofar as photographing in the urban environment, really just meant a bit of extra caution when working on the street. Protocols really only came to bear on my nature work: I ventured over to the Island only twice this year (normally, I'm off exploring once a month or so)and I managed only a week up in the Rockies in early October (travel was verboten in the Parks from mid-March until almost the end of June).
Assuming the vaccination efforts proceed at a reasonable pace, I'd just be content to continue "business as usual" with the additional goal of some preliminary explorations of the Interiors. Fingers are crossed.

Only 61 yrs old. You are still young!
Your idea of one camera, one lens, and one (or maybe two) kinds of film are a great discipline for studying the way one sees. Sometimes I restrict myself to one pen or one brush and one hue; forces one to really look at subject. Many great photographs have been taken with your camera-lens choice. Also a lot easier to carry. Have fun!

I had to google 'Mike Johnston'. I guess you're referring to his Leica for a Year article. Thanks for the inspiration.

When we all went into quarantine, I switched my college darkroom classes to digital photography. Now eagerly waiting for the fall 21 semester and a return to the dark side! (Spring will still be digital-but it did force me to up my digital game and learn some new things--never a bad thing to learn something new). I've done a lot of shooting this year and a fair amount of printing. Hoping to continue the momentum in 2021.

I use to do PJ work in the 70's and 80's. With covid I got back to street shooting, something I haven't done since the mid 80's. I found I still enjoy it but peoples attitudes to having their photo taken has changed a LOT. My goal in 2021 is to do more street photography. Photos of people doing stuff, preferably looking at the camera. I will be using both film and digital cameras. Each has their place.

I sorted through my film stocks yesterday and was reminded I still have some older but good condition C-41 to use, in addition to making good use of the last few rolls of E6 I took out of the fridge a few months ago, for processing in the Fujihunt kit.

Taking up tri-color gum printing. If I like what I get I’ll revisit a project from a couple years ago that involves non representational images and transmitted light. Or not. At the very least knowing how to do gum will give me another treatment to apply.

Hopefully, I can start traveling again. I've been dying to get back to Thailand. I've just finished my second digital project, and I'm returning to 4x5 film. Viet Nam has been VERY lucky with the pandemic, but we're not expecting a vaccine to arrive until May, and then there's the delay of getting everyone vaccinated. Yet I'm fortunate because there's so much to photograph here. But now I'd like to transition from photographing the street to photographing more of the sacred scenes in Asia.

I'm hoping to come up with a good idea of a project and actually finish it. Not a clue right now what it'll be though. If I can do some street shooting, that may figure into it, but I don't know. I'm at that point where I'm fairly sure I know what I'm doing when I have a camera in my hand, but I'm not completely sure what I want to say with it.

Other than photographing my latest grandson, I stopped photographic during the pandemic. This is not a time that I want to look back on.
