It's official. I'm moving to New Jersey!

And you'll have to change your handle to "MenacingBenny"

Before you leave you have to tell me where you get your "Love Me" stickers made so I can keep up the tradition here in the west!

I can't believe nobody else has said this yet...
learn your exit!
(as in what exit off the Turnpike you live near)

That also applies to the GSP (that's Garden State Parkway to you non-Jersey types).

As for not being allowed to pump your own gas... It's less expensive than the national average and you don't have to freeze your ass off in winter. Of course, your car insurance will cost you a LOT more...

Cool! We can go "down the shore" and split a Hoagy

Hoagy? down the shore we call them subs, as in submarine sandwhiches.

BTW, you can Google "Down The Shore" and pull up the website for Down The Shore Publishing based in Harvey Cedars, NJ. They publish books, calendars solely about the Jersey Shore.

You'll want to become familiar with this.

Funny me but I always thought Bennies was a drug reference. As in Red Benny. Too many Dead shows or too much Hunter S. Thompson books I guess.

I prefer another speculation that I've heard. The term originated in the days when credit and debit cards weren't universal. The tourists were always asking the locals to break 100 dollar bills even for small purchases. This was always somewhat annoying and instantly identified a vacationer from a local. Benny refers to the picture of Benjamin Franklin on the C note.
Is this true? No idea but I read it somewhere.

I am not complaining!

Bruce (Camclicker) is right about how you will be surrounded by a pack of cars on the Parkway. What he left out is that they all have NY plates.

On the Turnpike you get surrounded by trucks. On the Turnpike in the cars only section you are surrounded by drug and gun runners with NY plates. On Route 80 you get surrounded by trucks with PA plates hauling NY garbage. By the way, the garbage trailers are "open air" only covered by leaky tarps. It is all part of the joy of riding a motorcycle.

Not that I have personal knowledge of this, but am told that most bikers only venture onto Rt 80 during Gooch's Garlic Run....

I don't know how I missed this Alan, but congratulations. I will miss your being in the same part of the country as me, even though we have never met in person. Good luck out east, I hear that people are a bit more assertive there!

By the way, I do love the name MenacingBenny, you need to consider it!

Thanks Paul
I don't know about MenacingBenny (although it does have a ring to it), I've worked so hard on the whole underground/gorilla art thing and am just now starting to get some recognition for MenacingTourist...Oh well. I'm pretty sure the art scene is somewhat better on the East Coast.

I hope NJ is ready for me!

Alan - I'm sure you will love it in NJ. Best thing about it... You drive an hour in any direction and you will hit NYC, the Jersey Shore, Philly, or the mountains. I put together a NJ trip last year that was so much fun and now that I am back in NJ after a few months out west, I hope we can do another this year. You are on the list if it happens. As for the trem "Benny".....comes from the railroad. There was a line that ran from NY and Bayonne to the shore. They would put tags on the luggage that read "BNY" which was pronounced buy it's current name. Welcome to NJ.

They are beautiful, but Alan may not see them as mountains. To those used to the mountains in the west, the Eastern mountains look more like foothills!

Again, they have a beauty!

I have landed...well, almost.

This is my second day working at my new job and I will be signing the lease to the new living space tomorrow. I just got back to New Brunswick after dropping my wife and the rental car off at Newark airport and then taking the train to pick up the car I shipped. Whew!

My wife and I flew in last Thursday and have been driving all over Central NJ all week. For some reason we kept coming back to Princeton and made the mistake of falling in love with that area. What can I say? If the wife ain't happy ain't nobody happy.

We found a townhome to rent in West Windsor. It has a Princeton address but my 5yr old will go to school in West Windsor. Go figure. Somehow I also managed to avoid the turnpike.

I'll be spending the rest of this month on couches in NYC and then get to move in May 1st. My wife and kids will get here the end of May so I can impress my new boss by staying late every night

The important thing is I shipped my cameras to the office and they're here just waiting to be used. My film is in the office refridgerator.

Sounds like you are home

Good luck with the new start, family and cameras what more does one need?

Alan, welcome to New Jersey! Good to know that you found a living space. Once you are settled down after the move, maybe we can meet up. I am in nearby Plainsboro.

BTW, from what I have heard, the WWP (West Windsor - Plainsboro) school district is one of the best in the state.

Regards,

Alan,

Package arrived, where do I send the check, do you want me to send to your wife in Salt Lake?

Let me know if you can.

Thanks again, awesome deal.

Dave

I used to work in NJ not all that long ago.

Here's what I noticed:

You can cross into New Jersey for free, but you have to pay to get out.
