It's Official!! Ilford to continue making ULF film!

ULTRA LARGE FORMAT FILM AUTHORIZED ILFORD DEALER

I'm thrilled to be able to announce that Ilford will continue to make
available most film sizes from 5x12" to 20x24" *if* there
are enough sales.

Here's how the program works. Ilford will make the odd and larger sizes once or twice a
year with the first run being delivered around tax time. Place your
order with one of the participating dealers (The
View Camera Store is one, of course. Ilford will have a press release
with the others.) in this special program between now and January 25, 2006. There is
no minimum order, but you do need make payment with the order and the
order can not be cancelled unless Ilford does not get enough orders to
make that size. Ilford USA will collect the orders from the dealers and
submit them to Ilford UK.

If there are enough boxes ordered (or close to it) Ilford will make a
special run in that size and deliver the film to us about April 15th. Of
course, if Ilford doesn't get enough orders to make a run your deposit
will be refunded.

Ilford gave us a price list of sizes from 5x12 up to 20x24 in both FP4+
and HP5+ in boxes of 25 sheets.

As you can see, the success of this program will depend on the ultra
large format community supporting Ilford and its dealers. The nice part
is that no one photographer has to shoulder the whole burden.

I hope they realize that this gives them a lot of good press even for us non ULF folks. Somehow, I don't see myself going past 8x10, but the fact that Ilford will support this segment of the community makes me more likely to use their products in my cameras.

I don't shoot LF or ULF but hearing this news is very encouraging in a time when most announcements regarding the production of traditional materials are negative. It makes me feel good to support a company like Ilford when they are making a serious attempt to support us.

Has Ilford given any indication of the size of the order that must be secured before there is a production run of 7x11 format?

No Delta???......dammit..... I am itching to switch from Kodak 8x10 tmax to Delta...and would love it if they had it in 12x20.....I will call and put an order for HP5

Fred, I know it's about UFL, but I'm feeling a little neurotic here -- will 8x10 still be readily available throughout the year?
Also, here's my catch 22... I am planning on getting a 7x17, but I'm not in a position to do that yet. Now I'm imagining that when I get my camera, there will be no film on the market -- will suppliers keep some in stock for people like me -- people new to ULF?

Patricia, two options:

1. Get camera and if you can't get film at that time, wait for new film tour

2. Buy some film, put it in freezer, and use it when you get camera

Patricia, there are limited emulsion choices of the commoner ULF formats on a more or less continuous basis -- for instance, Classic Pan 200/400 and Efke PL 25/50/100 are cut in a wide variety of sizes and stocks in small quantities by J&C Photo, Retro Photo, and Fotoimpex. It's only if you have to have Ilford or Kodak (instead of or in addition to the Continental offerings) that you might wind up waiting a few months to get the film you want.

To answer the first part of your question Patricia, yes, as far as I know all the normal stock sizes such as 8x10 will be available as usual - this is new scheme is in addition to the normal stock runs. Note for example that 11x14 HP5+ is already a stock item and so is not included in this special system but that 11x14 FP4+ is not a stock item and has been included. No doubt, Simon can confirm if this is correct, but it seems logical to me.

Simon, why the reluctance to cutting Delta (400) film in ULF as well as 8x10?

Are there any technical difficulties or does Ilford just does not see a market for it? I am guessing but I think for Kodak Tmy 400 has been a great seller in 8x10. Just curious.....

I like to keep my old cameras making images etc...

No technical reason, why DELTA 400 could not be finished 10 x 8 : we have no plans to make it ( stock turns I would Imagine ) I will speak to marketing for a fuller explanantion, we would not make DELTA in the larger ULF sizes, getting two products made is difficult enough !

8x10 film shouldn't be a problem for years to come.

Will 7x17 be available? Yes, if there is enough consumer demand, otherwise it will go the way of the VCR.
