issue with several cf lenses

The trick is to flick it up from one end to get the DOF preview to release.

I too was completely frustrated and felt like a complete plonker when I discovered how easy it was after reading the directions!

This is an annoyance for me also. However the lenses are so sharp fully opened that I now rarely bother to check the depth of field any more, because I know that it will always be better than what I am seeing.

thankyou guys su much. the pdf instructions did not do it for me, but flicking the button up from one side as suggested released the button on all lenses.this was a big help apug, because i sat here in tears. i don't think, i will ever use this useless button again. not worth the trouble

I use dof preview all the time on all my cameras.
I will admit it took me a bit to get the technique to be useful but it does help me on slr's where the lenses are always focussing wide open.

It's most helpful for me when shooting quickly and I need to make sure what I want/need will be exceptably sharp.
It really helps when shooting groups of people that aren't all arranged on one focus plane. Helps to get the best hyperfocal distance so all faces will be sharp enough.

It certainly isn't intuitive, either from looking at the lens or from reading hte instructions. Whatever you do, don't forget the secret. Sometimes the DOF preview can get set without out even knowing. Mine did that recently... I must have inadvertantly set it while putting the lens into or out of the camera bag. I wasn't driven to tears, but dumbfounded by how long it took me to figure out why the viewfinder was so dim. Dohhh.

p.s. I find DOF preview usefull when needed... which isn't often.

I use this feature all the time because I seem to shoot a lot of close or middle distance shots where depth-of-field is a critical choice. Thankfully the acute-matte screen gives enough extra brightness to be very helpful when the lens is stopped down. Studio work before the acute-matte screens was much more difficult and resulted in a lot of eyestrain.

I've used it. When I first got my 60mm I thought it was broken until I figured out how to disengage it.

Not that I would recommend, but a blob of eopxy glue might deactivate it forever.


Maybe even better would be just remembering how to engage and de-engage that feature. Every so often I do that whether I'm using it or not as a refresher course.
