Issue with Hasselblad 60mm

Hi,

Just received a 60mm CB from a seller on eBay. I tested it today with my 501CM and it's giving me some strange problems. At some shutter speeds it fires completely fine but on others, the shutter will fire off a half a second later after I've pressed the release. For some speeds, it'll fire the shutter first, then lift the mirror and lock it up, open the curtains, lower the mirror, and close the curtains all separate 5+ second intervals. I've never seen this problem happen with other lenses so I'm wondering if this a problem with the lens. The seller doesn't accept returns but I've opened a request since I'm almost certain that the lens is defective. Can anyone chime in on this?

Not that you have the ability to do so but I would check the lens on another body if given the chance and I assume you have another lens or two to check on the one 501CM you do have to see if something is not going buggy on the body.

Main springs on CF / CB lenses do "go" after awhile especially since a lot of this gear now just sits around not being used for much of the time. If it is indeed the lens that is defective I would get my money back or a few hundred credit to have a good repair person like Dave Odess get it in top shape.

fyi - if the lens "doesn't work as intended", according to ebay, it cannot be sold as used but only "for parts". if you open a complaint ebay will require the seller to take the lens back and return your money, even if he/she doesn't offer returns.

i know because this just happened to me about 3 months ago - used camera, i corresponded with seller who refused attempts to be reasonable - ebay told me to return the camera to seller and paid me full amount plus shipping. then presumbly went after seller.

the key was explaining what wasn't working and doing it all through ebay email. good luck!

It should work exactly the same as any other Hasselblad lens, if it isn't it needs servicing. Samy's camera reportedly has a good Hasselblad tech.

Since you are in Los Angeles take it into Samy's Camera on Fairfax and have Mike take a look at it. He has been my go to Hasselblad person for a decade.

As mentioned check the lens on another body and/or if your other lenses have no problems you can also check if the mirror and curtains are functioning correctly with no lens on the body. Although it is after the fact only buy from a seller who has a definite return policy.

Thanks for the input guys! I've never had this happen but the seller practically just gave the lens for free excluding the shipping cost through a partial refund. I'll also stop by Samy's hopefully soon to check if it's repairable.

Nice, good on the seller for doing that. It is most certainly repairable, I bet it just needs a new main spring, if that is what it is you could even ask them to put in the new Niravox type used in the CFi/CFe lenses that have much greater longevity.

Once you get it working, you'll have one of Hasselblad's best-ever lenses, the 60 is a stunner.

+1 on what Daniel just said. If the glass is clean, fixing the shutter is definitely worth the cost. I will probably set you back a couple hundred but this is a good price to pay for a 60! Congrats on this good deal.

Congratulations, yes, the 60 is a lovely lens, sharp enough to cut yourself with, wear eye protection when you look at the negatives.

... and you should also consider Steve Choi. He's been factory-trained servicing Hasselblads since Hector was a pup.

Everyone seems convinced it is the lens but I have yet to find a C \CB\ CFi etc etc type lens that will lower the mirror after the shutter has been released, that is a function of the body, the curtains closing is a result of releasing pressure on the shutter release after the frame has been exposed, again nothing to do with the lens shutter at all.
All the lens does is operate the shutter it performs no functions nor does it trigger any functions on the camera body.
Take the lens and back off the body, fire and hold the shutter, the mirror goes up, the blinds open and stay open until the shutter is released, the mirror remains up until the crank is wound on. Look no lens!!
Make sure you wind on the body before re-attaching the lens.

If that sequence isn't working properly it is the body. All that can happen with the lens is a shutter fault and that will have no effect at all on the sequence of the body.
If the body works as I described without the lens and is not correct with the lens the only possibility is the lens is not engaging correctly with the mechanical coupling that cocks the shutter and that is somehow mechanically interfering with the sequence but if it fits and locks firmly in place I can't see that happening but if the body is OK without the lens and OK with other lenses send it in but I would describe the fault fully.
