Issue with Acros 100 120 roll film

New to this film, have chosen it over FP4 to undertake portrait session. Shot in an RB67 125/f8 at 100asa. developed in R09 100:1 1hr stand Process. No stop bath just wash, fix, wash.

You can see from the image that there are clear areas to the one side of the neg. It is in the whole film but this is the worst example. Home developed in a paterson tank and plastic reels. I took a polaroid before and its not there. Not light leak as would be black. Is it a fault on the film, or an issue with using the stand process ? If I revert back to the normal processing is 6 minutes at 50:1 a good place to start.

Have processed others this way and no similar effects.

Bubble, bubble...

I have no answers and there might be several possibilities anyway but recently there have been other threads on stand development in Rodinal. Worth a look.

I had a good look and it has made me question whether the pros of stand development outweigh the cons

Your consolation is that it hasn't affected the portrait.

None of my business but I'd be interested in what attracts you to the 1:100 1 hour Rodinal stand development.

The 1:100 etc trips off the tongue rather smoothly as I say it aloud but alas it would seem to trip of the tongue rather better than it trips off the film

Are those bubbles right at the very edge of the film, on the rebate? It's hard to tell from the scan. If so, it's possible the edge of the film "stuck" to the rim of the reel - especially possible if the reel was even slightly damp. This would prevent the developer from uniformly coating the area and could lead to these bubbles. (no dev occurs, then the agitation caused by dumping out dev and fix in changes film location on reel and "dislodges" the film enough to let in fixer, hence clear areas...)

Just a thought...

acros and stand development don't work that well...I've had similar results with the film. you could go with diluted developer and a semi-stand regime

bubbles between the film and the reel. Whack the tank against the sink a few times to break them loose.

But since they don't impinge into the image area, don't sweat them either. But that's what they are.

Confirm bubbles.

You need to use just enough liquid to cover the top most reel and invert half a dozen times at beginning to disloge. Hitting a full tank may have a bad effect. A strong flow will remove, invert and hold. The clue is they are only on one side.

120 (or 127) in Patterson style reels is exposed cause the rebates are so small, and uniform development or fixing is not warranted. Ie you can get the same problem with 35mm but there is no intrusion into the image.

It can occur with any film type.

You had luck anyhow - this portrait is good developed on important parts of the negative. You can crop the edges and it will be fine.

I always hit the tank to dislodge bubbles. The roll of film was one of two, just to try the stand process test, so no great loss there.

Will only try it again if I've got a film that I'm not sure of the development times.

I hate to disagree about the Acros + Rodinal 1+100 being a bad combo, but I will. It is no worse than any other film in Rodinal 1+100 in my "OPINION". If you are having bubble problems with Rodinal stand then make sure your tank is nearly filled to the top. This is one time you don't need a lot of airspace in the tank for proper agitation 'cause you aren't agitating. Now, do your initial long agitation rap the tank down one or even two times( I use the palm of my hand with SS and plastic tanks) and then let set. I also always use up to three drops per-120 tank of Edwals LFN (not Kodak Photo-flo) in with my developer. I have never had a problem this way. Rodinal 1+100 and Acros play really very nice together.
